SmartStop Post Game Recap – Steelheads Come Up Short in Crucial Match-Up in Sudbury
Sudbury, ON – The Steelheads wrapped up their road trip against Sudbury on Friday night, sitting only 3 points out of a playoff spot in a crucial match up. Brampton has picked up a point in the last 6 of 7 games.
After last night’s record breaking performance by Luke Johnson, setting a career high and franchise record of 58 saves, ultimately resulting in a shootout loss, he returned to start in net tonight against the North Bay Battalion.
This game marked William Eggleton’s 150th and Nathan Amidovski’s 100th career OHL game respectively.
To kick things off, Brampton applied the pressure early with Carter Hicks getting the first couple of shots on net, keeping the Sudbury Wolves busy in their own end. Despite having some looks, Sudbury would not get a shot of their own on net until the 13-minute mark of the first period due to the Steelheads’ relentless push.
Johnson continued a solid performance, fending off quality chances from the Wolves to keep things scoreless early in the game.
Sudbury’s Brayden Bennett opened the scoring for the Wolves on a powerplay.
The first period ended with the Wolves up by 1-0, but Brampton leading the shots on goal 10 to 5.
Brampton suffered an early goal against only thirty seconds into the second period as they were caught off guard by Sudbury’s Chase Coughlan who made it 2-0.
Tensions between the two teams boiled over with just over 2 minutes left as a couple of penalties were handed out, sending the Steelheads to their first powerplay of the night.
The shots leveled out with Brampton trailing 19 to 20 at the end of the second period.
The third period kicked off with Johnson once again, making a handful of key saves to give the Steelheads a chance in the game.
At 9:25, Sudbury’s Jan Chovan scored on a 4-on-4 to make it 3-0 for the Wolves, enlarging the comeback task for the boys in white. However, the Steelheads answered moments after when Mason Roy scored his second goal of the season to reduce the score to 3-1.
Brampton’s offensive press continued late in the game but the Wolves would cap it off with an empty-netter with the final score of 4-1.
The Steelheads are back on home ice for an afternoon game on Family Day against the Battalion on Monday at 2pm.
