SmartStop Post Game Recap – Steelheads Battle Hard but Come Up Short in Shootout Loss to Firebirds
BRAMPTON, ON – In recognition of those who have served and continue to serve, the team held its annual Military Appreciation Night, adding an extra layer of pride and purpose to tonight’s matchup between the Steelheads and the Firebirds.
Just one minute into the opening frame, Mason Zebeski headed to the box for roughing, putting the Trout on an early penalty kill and setting the tone for what would become a turbulent period.
The Firebirds came out flying, generating several dangerous chances within the first three minutes. But Zach Bowen stood tall, turning away each attempt with confidence and control.
At the 11-minute mark, Firebirds’ Jimmy Lombardi was assessed a high-sticking penalty, giving the Steelheads their first power-play opportunity of the night. Despite strong looks – including quality shots from Gabriel Chiarot and Jakub Fibigr – the team could not find the back of the net.
The period wrapped up scoreless, with tensions rising as both teams battled hard but ultimately cancelled out each other’s efforts.
Coming off the first intermission, the second period was kicked off by Matej Stankoven working a crisp give-and-go with Zebeski in front of the net. After receiving the return pass, Stankoven ripped a shot into the top-right corner, putting the Trout on the board less than a minute into the frame and sending the crowd into a frenzy.
Momentum shifted shortly after when Peter Green took a four-minute penalty, sending the Steelheads to an extended penalty kill. The Firebirds unfortunately capitalized on the man-advantage, with Josh Colosimo tying the game at the six minutes mark.
A back-to-back penalty for Firebirds’ Alex Kostov then Peter Green sent the game to a period of 5-on-4 action on the ice.
The Steelheads continued to generate quality chances as the period wound down, but both teams proved evenly matched in skill and strength, keeping the score locked at 1–1 heading into the second intermission.
The third period opened with more back-and-forth action, each side battling to break the deadlock.
Tensions rose in the final minutes as bodies crowded the crease – Chiarot, Fibigr, and others battling for position in a chaotic scramble. Despite the pressure in the offensive zone, the Steelheads just could not push the puck across the goal line.
Regulation ended still tied, sending the game to sudden-death overtime. The CAA Centre buzzed with anticipation as fans waited to see who would deliver the deciding goal. Bowen made several outstanding saves to keep the Firebirds from closing out the night.
A penalty kill in overtime had Steelheads fans on edge, but the boys in white and blue held firm, protecting their net with determination.
Eventually, the five minute overtime ended and the boys headed to a shootout. Unfortunately, Gabriel Chiarot and Joshua Avery were unable to convert, while both Firebirds shooters found the back of the net, securing the victory for Flint.
Despite a hard-fought effort, the Steelheads fell short in the shootout. They return to home ice Sunday afternoon for a matchup against the Sudbury Wolves.
