SmartStop Post Game Recap – Steelheads Battle Hard, but Come Up Short Against the Wolves in OT
BRAMPTON, ON – Coming off a big win against the Bulldogs, the Steelheads returned to action this Saturday afternoon for their annual Pucks n’ Paws game, facing off against the Sudbury Wolves. Fans packed the rink alongside their furry friends, all eager to watch the team hit the ice in their blackout jerseys.
The opening frame featured a fast-paced but scoreless stretch of hockey. Both teams generated quality chances, but strong goaltending at each end kept the game locked at zero. With no penalties and plenty of back-and-forth action, the period showcased clean, high-tempo play as the Steelheads aimed to stretch their three-game winning streak to four.
Luke Johnson was a standout in the first, turning away multiple high-danger opportunities and keeping the Wolves from gaining an early edge.
Early in the second period, Gabriel Chiarot broke the deadlock – continuing his momentum after closing out last night’s scoring. Just one minute into the frame, and assisted by Matej Stankoven, Chiarot fired home a rebound off Wolves goaltender Karsen Chartier’s pads, sending the crowd – and their canine companions – into a frenzy.
Moments later, Sudbury was called for too many men, giving the Steelheads their first power play of the afternoon. Despite crisp puck movement and several close calls, the Trout were unsuccessful in their attempts to capitalize.
The Steelheads controlled the pace for much of the period, applying sustained pressure in the offensive zone. However, back-to-back penalties assessed to brothers David and Peter Green handed the Wolves two minutes of a 5-on-3 advantage. The Wolves made the most of it, tying the game 1–1.
The remainder of the period was a tense, hard-fought battle as both sides pushed to break the stalemate and regain control.
Early in the third, the Steelheads were handed a power-play opportunity after the Wolves’ Chase Coughlan was called for tripping. But despite the advantage, they could not convert, and the game returned to even strength as tension mounted and both teams pushed desperately to take the lead.
The Steelheads applied heavy pressure in the offensive zone, controlling possession and generating quality chances, but the puck refused to cross the line.
As the final minutes ticked down, neither side managed to break through, sending the game into a 3-on-3 sudden-death overtime tied at 1-1. Johnson stood tall with several key saves throughout the extra frame, but with just 30 seconds remaining, Kieron Walton found an opening and sealed a 2-1 win for the Wolves.
Despite a determined effort, the Steelheads came up just short in overtime. They will look to bounce back on home ice this Wednesday, December 3rd at 11:00 a.m., when they host the Guelph Storm for a special school-day game.
