SmartStop Post-Game Recap – Physical Battle Goes Against Steelheads
Angus MacDonell had the lone Mississauga goal as they drop a penalty filled contest 3-1 to the Barrie Colts Friday night at Paramount Fine Foods Centre.
First Period
It didn’t take long for these teams to get the emotion into the game. On the first shift, Porter Martone took a big hit from Connor Punnett and Angus Macdonell was not a fan of it, dropping the gloves for a spirited tilt, setting the tone for what was a physical contest.
Six minutes into the period it was Barrie that found the scoresheet first when Beau Akey fired a wrist shot through traffic. Ryerson Leenders got the blocker on it, but didn’t get enough as the puck trickled over the line to make it 1-0.
Just 30 seconds later, the rough stuff continued when Martone and Grayson Tiller squared off for the second fight of the night, though it was not the last.
Shots on Goal – 8 BAR / 7 MISS
Second Period
After spending almost the entire first period in the penalty box due to a misconduct, Macdonell didn’t waste much time impacting the game in a different way when he finished a pretty pass from Luke Misa for his eighth of the season, tying things at one.
The Steelheads spent the majority of the second period shorthanded as they went on the penalty kill six times, but Ryerson Leenders made highlight reel save after highlight reel save to keep the home team within reach.
The dam would finally break however as just under halfway through the frame Roenick Jodoin beat Leenders in front to give Barrie the lead.
Only a couple minutes later the third fight of the night took place, this time between William Eggleton and Bode Stewart. It was Eggleton’s first career OHL fight.
Leenders continued to be excellent through the rest of the second, helping Mississauga stay within one despite taking eight minor penalties.
Shots on Goal – 13 BAR / 7 MISS
Third Period
After spending most of the second period down a man Mississauga had an early power play in the third, however it was still Barrie taking advantage.
Less than 90 seconds in, a Steelheads shot was blocked by Bode Stewart, deflecting out of the zone. Stewart then won the race for the puck and went on a breakaway, sniping a wrist shot over the blocker of Leenders to extend the lead to 3-1.
With Barrie on the second half of a back to back and down a forward (Beau Akey left the game with an injury in the second), they were getting noticeably fatigued as the period went on and Mississauga was applying all of the pressure. Sam Hillebrandt for the second time in as many games at Paramount Fine Foods Centre was extremely strong, holding the fort and guiding the Colts to a 3-1 victory despite a relentless third from the home team.
Shots on Goal – 8 BAR /18 MISS
