SmartStop Post-Game Recap – Overtime Goes Against Mississauga
MISSISSAUGA, ON – Vilmer Alriksson scored the overtime winner as the Guelph Storm defeated the Mississauga Steelheads 3-2 in overtime on Wednesday afternoon.
With 1:18 remaining in overtime and the Steelheads pressuring in the Guelph end, the puck deflected out of the zone and Alriksson was alone with the goaltender for a breakaway. He made no mistake, pulling off a strong move to deke out Ivankovic and put it in the net to give the Storm a 3-2 victory
For Mississauga, Finn Harding and Kieren Witkowski had the goals. Marc Boudreau, Luke Dragusica and Stevie Leskovar had the assists. Jack Ivankovic made 19 saves in the loss.
Brayden Gillespie was outstanding in goal for the Storm, stopping 34 shots in the victory. Wil McFadden and Jett Luchanko had their other goals.
Not much took place in the first 30 minutes, however halfway through the second Guelph had their best opportunity to take a lead when there was a flurry of shots from in close that Ivankovic was able to turn aside and keep it 0-0.
The Storm struck first with 7:30 left in the middle frame when Michael Buchinger took a shot from the point with traffic in front where McFadden deflected it past the blocker of Ivankovic, putting them up 1-0.
It was a significant milestone for the rookie, as the tally was his first career OHL goal.
Just 1:40 into the third Mississauga got themselves back in it. Set up in the offensive zone the puck found its way to the point where Harding put it through traffic and rang off the crossbar and in to tie the game at one.
Midway through the frame and with Guelph still yet to record a shot on goal, Leskovar’s shot created a big rebound in front and Witkowski was able to bury the rebound, making it a 2-1 game.
The lead was short lived however, as just 12 seconds later the Storm would find the equalizer when Luchanko scored off a nice feed from Alriksson to even it up at two.
With 2:34 remaining the away team had a 2-on-1 rush looking for the winner, but their shot went off the crossbar and out of play to keep things level, sending the Steelheads to their first overtime of the season, where Alriksson ended things.
