SmartStop Post-Game Recap – Déjà Vu in Mississauga
MISSISSAUGA, ON – Two Dean Loukus PPGs, a shorthanded break to take the lead in the third, and an exciting victory all mirrored Thursday’s game as the Mississauga Steelheads returned home and beat the Barrie Colts 5-4 Friday night.
The Steelheads (26-20-4-0) came out on top of the back and forth affair. Their power play exploded for three more goals, which included Parker Von Richters game winner.
Loukus again had two power play goals in the win. Lucas Karmiris and Angus MacDonell also had goals, and Ryerson Leenders made 19 saves to pick up the victory.
The Colts (20-25-3-0) fell short despite power play goals by Jelsma, York, and Jodoin. Beaudoin also added a tally, and goaltender Sam Hillebrandt made 40 stops.
The Colts opened the scoring only 3;17 into the first period, when a power play zone entry saw Jelsma streak to the net, receive a pass and fire a shot past Leenders.
Another power play opportunity soon after saw the Colts double their early lead, when a passing play down low led to a slot shot from York. who beat Leenders glove side.
The Steelheads got one back two minutes later with a power play goal of their own, when a pretty pass from Luke Misa set up Loukus in front to rifle a shot past Hillebrandt. Misa and Loukus pick right up where they left off Thursday and combine to strike again.
Less than two minutes into the second period, Von Richter held the line at the point and fired a shot on goal that ricocheted to Karmiris off the rebound, who made no mistake in front to tie the game at two.
Mississauga took the lead on yet another power play goal from Loukus, after he took advantage of Porter Martone’s zone entry and sniped a wrist shot past Hillebrandt from the slot.
A failed clearing attempt less than a minute into the third period led to a point shot that snuck through Leenders, and was knocked in from the paint by Beaudoin, tying the game at three.
After a back and fourth period filled with chances, a neutral zone turnover sprung Karmiris on the penalty kill, who broke in with MacDonell for a two on one, and MacDonell converted Karmiris’ pass in front to take the lead again.
The Colts answered back on their power play, when a rebound from a point shot sat in front of the net until it found the stick of Jodoin, who potted his 12th of the year to tie the game at four.
With two minutes left in the game, the Steelheads drew a penalty and converted to take the lead. Von Richter’s laser beam-esque point shot found the top of the net to give the Steelheads a 5-4 lead, which they would not surrender.
