SmartStop Post Game Recap – Chiarot’s Last-Second Winner Stuns the Bulldogs
BRAMPTON, ON – Fresh off a road victory against the Otters, the Steelheads returned to home ice aiming to extend their two-game winning streak as they faced the formidable Brantford Bulldogs – who entered the night undefeated in regulation. A lively crowd packed the CAA Centre, ready to cheer on the Trout and take part in the team’s annual Miracle on Main night, a heartwarming tradition dedicated to giving back.
Fans were encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys in support of local families in need during the holiday season. As always, the community delivered, showcasing the powerful bond between hockey and giving.
The Steelheads knew they had a challenge ahead of them, but they wasted no time rising to the occasion. Midway through the opening frame, MacGregor Richmond buried his second goal of the season – set up beautifully by Julian Demiglio – to give Mississauga the 1-0 lead and ignite the crowd. The rest of the period featured clean, high-tempo hockey with strong defensive efforts on both sides. In the final 30 seconds, however, Jakub Fibigr was assessed a penalty, sending the Steelheads to the kill to close the first and begin the second.
Starting the middle frame shorthanded, the Trout displayed discipline and grit, successfully shutting down the Bulldogs’ early push. Goaltender Zach Bowen stole the spotlight, standing tall and turning aside a flurry of shots as Brantford pressed to tie the game.
At the 12-minute mark, in a surprising move, the Bulldogs briefly pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, though the strategy was cut short when Peter Green took a penalty and play returned to five-on-four. Moments later, during the ensuing power play, Jake O’Brien finally broke through for Brantford, knotting the game 1-1.
The Steelheads answered with pressure of their own after a slashing call against Ryder Boulton put them on their first power play of the night. While they couldn’t capitalize, strong chances from Demiglio, Kieran Witkowski, and others kept the Bulldogs on their heels.
Entering the third period tied, both teams took the ice with intensity as they fought not only for the win, but to keep their respective streaks alive. The frame featured steady, disciplined back-and-forth play until a late Bulldogs penalty opened the door for a potential Steelheads regulation victory.
Then came the turning point: a second Brantford penalty created a crucial 5-on-3 opportunity. With time winding down and overtime looming, Gabriel Chiraot fired a shot from just beyond the blue line, beating the goalie and sending the CAA Centre into absolute chaos. His goal secured a miraculous 2-1 win and handed the Bulldogs their first regulation loss of the season.
The Steelheads are back on home ice tomorrow afternoon for the annual Pucks n’ Paws game, where they’ll take on the Sudbury Wolves.
