Quiet night – Steelheads fall to Colts
Barrie, ON – It has been a tough stretch for the Trout, as they dropped their third consecutive game, tonight to the Colts. For the first time this season the Steelheads offence was held to just two goals.
Brad Gardiner looked to get the scoring started just three minutes in, but Jacob Gibbons denied his chance with the blocker.
The Colts continued the pressure finding themselves on two separate 2-on-1 breaks, but some good defensive sticks from the Trout kept the game scoreless.
Just before the halfway mark in the opening frame Adam Zidlicky raced to grab a loose puck, speeding in on a breakaway. Zidlicky showed off his hands as he slid the puck to his backhand and roofed it upstairs to give the Trout the icebreaker.
The Steelheads looked for more as they found themselves on the powerplay, but Hillebrandt turned away back-to-back chances from Rehkopf and Martone to keep the Colts within one.
Just under three minutes into the second period the Colts tied the game on a pretty passing play. New addition Dalyn Wakely found Bode Stewart who then connected with Brad Gardiner for the goal.
Just before the halfway mark in the period, the Steelheads found themselves on the penalty kill following an interference penalty to Stevie Leskovar. The Colts powerplay started off strong as they had multiple chances but they were turned aside by Gibbons. Martone found himself in on a shorthanded break at the end of the kill, but the puck rolled off his stick.
Fresh out of the box Leskovar stripped Kashawn Aitcheson of the puck before he fired a shot into Hillebrandt. Angus MacDonell picked up the rebound but narrowly missed wide to keep the game tied.
In the last minute of the period Brampton looked for the tiebreaker. Rehkopf broke down the wing before dropping a pass for Jakub Fibigr who was stopped. Lucas Karmiris picked up the rebound and found Parker Von Richter in the slot, but he too was stopped by Hillebrandt.
Barrie did not need much time to take the lead, as they scored just three minutes into the third period. Wakely continued his excellent start in Barrie as he scored his third goal and fifth point in just his second game with the club.
The Steelheads found themselves back on the penalty kill following a tripping penalty to Adam Zidlicky. Brampton won the draw and Martone broke in on a two on one with Angus MacDonell shorthanded. Martone toe-dragged by the sprawled defender before firing a shot, but was shut down by Hillebrandt.
The Colts doubled their lead courtesy of a seeing eye slap-shot from Gabriel Eliasson.
Barrie nearly added another with four minutes to play, but a sprawling Gibbons smothered Justin Handsor’s shot.
Beau Akey found the dagger for Barrie, ripping the puck the length of the ice into the empty Steelheads net.
Mason Zebeski got one back for the Steelheads with the empty net, but it was too little too late as the Steelheads fell 4-2.
The Steelheads look to rebound next Friday the 18th in Brampton as they face the 67s. You can grab your tickets here!
