Conquering the Colts- Steelheads win 5-2 against Barrie
Brampton, ON – The Steelheads returned to the win column in style by overpowering the Barrie Colts to a score of 5-2. A stellar outing from Jack Ivankovic, alongside a four-point night from Carson Rehkopf led the way for the Trout.
The Colts put the pressure on early with a flurry of shots on the Steelheads’ goal. Some stellar saves from Jack Ivankovic and good blocks from the defence kept it scoreless.
Just over a minute later the Steelheads built some pressure of their own. Luke Misa kept the puck in at the blueline before he slung it in front for Porter Martone. The captain flipped it to Carson Rehkopf who was cutting to the net. Rehkopf lost the handle of the puck, but he did not give up on the play, as he threw the puck towards the net from the corner. Rehkopf’s shot slipped by the stunned Barrie netminder Sam Hillebrandt to give the Trout the lead.
Over the next few minutes, the Steelheads and Colts exchanged powerplays. First, it was Carson Rehkopf who was called for a slash. The Barrie man advantage was cut short when Beau Jelsma ran into Jack Ivankovic.
The Steelheads would not let their power play go to waste as Jack Van Volsen finished off a tic-tac-toe play. Rehkopf sent the puck to the goal line for Martone, who one-touched it to the slot where it was wired home by Van Volsen.
The Steelheads found themselves short-handed at the end of the period, but that did not stop them from putting the pressure on Barrie. Carson Rehkopf continued to fly around the ice. After he whiffed a clearing attempt he brought it down himself before he threw a centering feed for Adam Zidlicky, but his tip narrowly missed wide.
The second period started with a bang when Mason Zebeski leveled Gabriel Eliasson into the boards.
The Steelheads nearly extended their lead courtesy of a lucky bounce when Martin Vaculik sprung around the net and attempted a centering feed. The puck deflected off the stick of the Colts defender and bounced over the net, but Gabriel Eliasson fired a shot wide. The puck bounced off the boards to the backdoor where Brad Gardiner banged it home.
Brampton came inches away from regaining their two-goal lead when Adam Zidlicky threw the puck to the middle for Mason Zebeski. The Oakville native quickly snapped a shot by Hillebrandt, but he could not beat the crossbar.
The Colts turned up the pressure around the halfway mark in the third period. First, it was Cole Beaudoin who sprung down the wing and wired one into the blocker of Ivankovic. Then, Ivankovic stood tall through a screen to stop a flurry of chances.
With six minutes left to play the Colts tied the game. Beau Akey received a pass at the blue line and threw a shot on goal, which soared through a screen into the top corner.
With just under three minutes to play Carson Rehkopf broke in on a two-one-one with Porter Martone. Rehkopf fired one wide of the goal, but Martone picked up the loose puck and threw it to the slot. Luke Misa sprung into the slot and wired it by Hillebrandt to give the Trout a 3-2 lead.
The Colts pushed with the net empty, but after a shot was blocked, Adam Zidlicky scooped up the loose puck and slung it the length of the ice into the empty net to double the Trout lead.
The Steelheads were not done yet though. With the Barrie net empty for a second time, Porter Martone launched the puck up ice for Carson Rehkopf to skate into. The Kraken prospect picked up the puck in stride and deposited it into the net to put the cherry on top of a 5-2 Trout win.
The Steelheads are back home next Friday for Miracle on Main Street. It will be a game you will not want to miss so grab your tickets here!
