Spitfires Win 5-3 Over Flint in Preseason Action
WINDSOR, ON.
The Spitfires started a fairly new lineup in their first preseason game as many of the regulars sat out. The game started on a bad note as they gave up the games first two goals and in a hole 2-0 just over halfway through the period. In the final 2 minutes of the period the Spitfires got a goal back with a powerplay chance. Carson Woodall shot the puck from the point and it found it’s way into the net for his 1st of the preseason. The assists went to Greentree and Greenwell. Just over a minute later, the Spitfires would tie it up at 2. Winegard sent a pass to Castle and he went in on a 2 on 1 and chose to shoot and sniped his first of the preseason in the bottom corner. The shots were 14-12 after 20 minutes in favour of Flint.
In the second period, there was a lot of back and forth action. Both teams had a powerplay chance but came up empty. In the final 5 minutes of the frame it was a goal furry. The Spitfires took their first lead of the game with just over four minutes left as Smith and Morgan worked behind the net and got the puck to Nesbitt in front who chipped in his first of the preseason. Just a minute and a half later, a pretty passing play from Martin to Woodall/Castle to Abraham and he sniped his first. In the final minute of the frame, the Firebirds struck back with a goal from Giroux to make it 4-3 heading into the third period. Shots were 22-21 for the Spitfires after 40 minutes.
In the third period, the Spitfires would add to their lead to make it 5-3 just over halfway through the frame. Nesbitt stripped the defenseman off the puck in the attacking zone and fed Kyler Morgan in front and he sniped his first of the preseason. The Firebirds would pull the goalie late but the Spitfires couldn’t find the empty net. The Spitfires held on for the 5-3 win.
