Spitfires Fall to Late Sting Comeback 6-3
WINDSOR, ON.
The Spitfires were looking to continue their momentum from Thursday’s OT victory into tonight’s game. They wanted to string together a few wins as they started the season with a long homestand. However, the Sting had other plans, two goals in 27 seconds would start a down fall. The Spitfires did tie it late before the Sting put three away and took the win.
In the first period, both teams had powerplay chances and failed to convert. The Sting also had a penalty shot but Sikic put it wide of the net. In the dying seconds of the period, the Spitfires struck first. Peer went in on a partial breakaway and was stopped. Surzycia played the puck into the corner and Woodall stripped the defenceman off the puck and passed it to Morneau on the boards; he passed it to Peer in the slot and made three nifty dangles and finished the play top shelf for his 2nd tally on a beautiful goal. The Spitfires had a narrow 9-8 shot advantage after the first period.
In the second period, the game slowed down as reviews hampered a Sting chance. They appeared to score but it was ruled off for goalie interference. The Spitfires capitalized on that and jumped in on the offensive. A 2 on 1 with Smith and Spellacy developed, and Smith chose to keep it and he sniped his 2nd of the year. The Spitfires led 2-0 just 5 minutes into period 2. The Sting would fight back and score on a powerplay chance to make it a 2-1 game. Sarnia would take a 23-20 shot lead after 40 minutes of play.
In period three, the Sting would score two goals in 27 seconds and quickly turn the game around and take a 3-2 lead. The Spitfires would respond just six minutes later to tie the game. A Cristoforo point shot went wide and off the end boards, it bounced to Davis and he tucked it in for his first of the season. Less than three minutes later, the Sting would score to take a 4-3 lead. The Sting would add two more, one on a powerplay and another on an empty net and take this one 6-3.
The Spitfires are back in action on Monday for a 2:05pm Thanksgiving game vs the Soo Greyhounds.
