Knowling is the #1-ranked North American goalie on NHL Central Scouting\u2019s list for the 2026 Upper Deck NHL Draft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re extremely excited to welcome Brady and his family to the Saginaw Spirit,\u201d said Drinkill. \u201cBrady is an elite goaltender who has consistently proven himself at the highest levels of his position, especially in international play with high stakes. His talent, work ethic, and competitive nature make him a tremendous addition to our team. He is an equally impressive young man off the ice as well \u2013 a team-first player that is driven to do anything to help his teammates succeed. We are beyond thrilled to bring him into our organization today and look forward to seeing the impact Brady will have both on and off the ice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knowling, a dual US-Canadian citizen originally from Toronto, Ont., is a 6\u20195\u201d left-hand catching goaltender. The Spirit selected Knowling with their third-round pick in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEver since I first toured Saginaw, I loved the place and the staff,\u201d said Knowling. \u201cI\u2019m happy it worked out and that I\u2019m able to be here for what will be a fantastic year. I believe we are going to do something special this season and we have the team to do it \u2013 from goalies to skaters and staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Knowling has spent the last two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program. Last season, he posted a 15-13-3-1 record, 3.51 GAA and .883 SV% with the NTDP\u2019s U-18 team. He also appeared in a game with the U-17 squad, with a 2.01 GAA and .946 SV%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrady brings a very strong pedigree as a goaltender to our team and strengthens our crease,\u201d said goaltending coach Kevin Delamarter. \u201cHe brings great size, athleticism, and overall skill. I\u2019m excited to help him continue to build on his abilities and overall development here in Saginaw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last summer, Knowling led Team USA\u2019s U-18 team to a Hlinka Gretzky Cup gold medal with four wins, a 2.35 GAA and .914 SV%. He joined the Americans for the IIHF World Junior Championship in January of 2026 as well.<\/p>\n<p>Knowling won the inaugural game of this season\u2019s CHL USA Prospects Challenge in Calgary, AB back on November 25th. These are players that we really believe we can help turn into pros and reach their dream of playing in the NHL.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1st Round, 6th Overall: (F) Drew Bate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From Union, Ont., Bate joins the Spirit from the London Jr. Knights U16 AAA program. Bate led his Jr. Knights team in and ALLIANCE scoring with an impressive 72 points (34G-38A) in 27 games. He is a right-shot center standing in at 5\u201910.25, 163lbs. He led London in postseason scoring as well, with 7G-14A\u201421P in just eight ALLIANCE playoff games, and 7G-6A\u201413P in six games at the OHL Cup.<\/p>\n<p>With the Jr. Knights, Bate was a champion at both the U15 (2025) and U16 (2026) level. He was named the 2026 ALLIANCE Player of the Year this spring.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great being here with my parents, I\u2019m really looking forward to some great games and a lot of success in Saginaw,\u201d said Bate. \u201cI\u2019m a very competitive guy, I like winning, we had a great year [with the London Jr. Knights], but I know the work starts now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2nd Round, 24th Overall: (F) Kyler Lauder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spirit took Lauder (LAW-durr) with their first selection of day two at the OHL Priority Selection. Lauder led the Central Ontario Wolves U16 AAA team with 35G-34A\u201469P in 32 games played as an alternate captain. He is a left-shot forward standing at 5\u20199.75\u201d, 156lbs, and was named the OMHA East\u2019s Player of the Year. In the playoffs, Lauder added 7G-9A\u201416P in eight games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a little nervous because the first day of the draft didn\u2019t go my way, but things ended up okay and I got to go to a great organization,\u201d said Lauder. \u201cIt\u2019s been a great ride so far and I\u2019m grateful to my parents for getting me to this point. Drew and I had never met before, but it\u2019s cool that we get to do this together and we became friends real fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bate and Lauder, along with 26 other prospects and returning Spirit players will begin development camp this weekend at the Bay County Civic Arena. Marie, Ont. as they take on the Greyhounds Friday, September 18th at 7:07pm. Saginaw hosts the Flint Firebirds the next night, Saturday, September 19th at 7:05pm for their <strong>home opener<\/strong>. That night\u2019s battle is also the first of the eight-game <strong>Coors Light I-75 Divide Cup<\/strong> series against Flint, which will see the trophy handed out for an eleventh time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Games by Opponent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Saginaw\u2019s most frequent matchups will be against <strong>West Division<\/strong> opponents Flint, the Windsor Spitfires, and the Soo Greyhounds, with eight (8) games against each. They will meet the Sarnia sting six (6) times.<\/p>\n<p>They will meet the <strong>Midwest Division\u2019s<\/strong> London Knights, Kitchener Rangers, Erie Otters, and Guelph Storm four (4) times. The season series against the Owen Sound Attack will be two (2) games, one at each team\u2019s venue.<\/p>\n<p>All teams in the <strong>Eastern Conference <\/strong>will play a two-game home-and-road season series against the Spirit (NB, BAR, SBY, BRAM, NIAG, KIT, PBO, OSH, OTT, BFD).<\/p>\n<p>Saginaw hosts the reigning OHL and Memorial Cup Champion Kitchener Rangers on Saturday, October 10th at 7:05pm. Beforehand, Saginaw took center Drew Bate of the London Jr. Knights with their sixth overall selection on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In total, the Spirit selected seven forwards, five defensemen, and two goalies. Eight players came from Ontario, two from both Michigan and Pennsylvania, one from Indiana and one from New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was great, we got a lot of the players we really targeted,\u201d said GM Dave Drinkill. \u201cI know our scouts are really happy with the way this turned out, now it\u2019s all about development. For these families to come and take tours and see what we have to offer in Saginaw, I\u2019m excited for them to see what a great place it is to play junior hockey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2nd Round, 24th Overall: (F) Kyler Lauder<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spirit took Lauder (LAW-durr) with their first selection of day two at the OHL Priority Selection. Lauder led the Central Ontario Wolves U16 AAA team with 35G-34A\u201469P in 32 games played as an alternate captain. He is a left-shot forward standing at 5\u20199.75\u201d, 156lbs, and was named the OMHA East\u2019s Player of the Year. In the playoffs, Lauder added 7G-9A\u201416P in eight games.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKyler is a complete player,\u201d said Head Scout Greg Hammell. \u201cYou look at the skating ability, the skill, the motor &#8211; we were really happy with the pick. He was a player that we didn\u2019t think would be available for us at pick 24, so we were ecstatic when we could draft him. He\u2019ll play up your lineup, contribute on both sides of the puck, and has shown that he can produce consistently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3rd Round, 45th Overall: (G) Egor Sokolov<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sokolov (SOCK-oh-lov) of the Toronto Marlboros U16 AAA team was the first goaltender taken by the Spirit at the 2026 OHL Priority Selection. The 16-year-old stands at 6\u20192, 192lbs and catches with his left hand. He posted a 2.20 goals against average (GAA) and .910 save percentage (SV%) with a 21-10-2 record. Sokolov also won his lone appearance at the 2026 OHL Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEgor stood out to us immediately as a top-tier goalie in this draft class,\u201d said Goaltending Coach Kevin Delamarter. \u201cFrom his fundamental skills, size, and ability to read the play, to his excellent skating and high compete level on the ice, he\u2019s a player with a very high ceiling. He is mature, disciplined, and incredibly dedicated to his overall game, and I\u2019m excited to work with him in Saginaw.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3rd Round, 58th Overall: (D) Brayden Barkic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Defenseman Brayden Barkic (BARK-ik) was the first player at his position to be taken by the Spirit in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection. A left-shot defenseman standing at 6\u20191.5\u201d, 182lbs, Barkic spent this past season with the Don Mills Flyers U16 AAA team, registering 2G-9A&#8211;11P in 61games played.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBrayden is a kid that is a rare breed as far as his size and presence coupled with how mobile he is,\u201d said Director of Player Development Jordan Selinger. \u201cWe think bringing that element and edge of physicality into the way Chris Lazary and his staff coach the game can really bring out some offense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>4th Round, 71st Overall: (D) Griffin Carver<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Flat Rock, Michigan\u2019s Griffin Carver became Saginaw\u2019s first American drafted at the 2026 OHL Priority Selection. He captained the Detroit Little Caesars 15U AAA team in 2025-2026, posting 23 points (6G-17A) in 21 games in the regular season. Carver followed up with four assists in three playoff games, as well as five assists in five games at the 2026 OHL Cup. In April, Carver was named to the 2026-2027 US National Team Development Program Under-17 Team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone that has seen us play knows that we love offensive defensemen like Levi Harper, Zayne Parekh and Pavel Mintyukov. Carver fits right into that mold,\u201d said Assistant GM Brian Prout. \u201cWe have a good history of allowing the NTDP to do what they do best, and that\u2019s develop the players. They get bigger and stronger and more ready to step into the OHL when the time comes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>6th Round, 121st Overall: (F) Jacob Curic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jacob Curic (CURR-ik) is a left-handed forward from the Toronto Nationals U16 AAA team. He stands at 6\u20193.75\u201d, 192lbs. \u00a0From Etobicoke, Ont., Curic scored three goals in 20 games with the Nationals while adding 132 penalty minutes. He added another four points (1G-3A) in eight games with the Oakville Rangers U16 AAA program.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think physicality is the thing he brings most,\u201d said Director of Player Development Jordan Selinger. \u201cAs a guy with a lot of size, he skates really well and is a presence on the ice. He\u2019s got an intriguing skill set and there are some things we can help him with to get more offense out of his game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>7th Round, 127th Overall: (D) Johnathan Tait<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Johnathan Tait comes to Saginaw from the Mississauga Senators U16 AAA team. He is a native of Burlington, Ontario and stands 6\u20191.25\u201d, 168lbs. A left shot defenseman, Tait had nine assists in 32 games with the Senators in 2025-2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohnny is someone that definitely caught our eye with him early on and we were definitely pleased to get him where we did in the draft,\u201d said Selinger. \u201cHe plays a game that we\u2019re looking for in Saginaw as far as moving pucks from the back end and I\u2019m excited to see him at development camp.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>8th Round, 147th Overall: (G) Mason Martin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Martin was the second goaltender taken by the Spirit at this year\u2019s Priority Selection. From Byron Center, Mich., he played for the Fox Motors 15U AAA team in 2025-2026. Martin posted a 1.49 GAA, two shutouts, and an 8-2-0 record through ten regular season games. He is also a left-catching goaltender, and listed as 6\u20191\u201d, 141lbs. His season also included an appearance with Team Gold at USA Hockey\u2019s Boy\u2019s Select 15 Player Development Camp.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came very highly wanted going into this draft,\u201d Michigan scout Ethan Range. \u201cWatching him throughout the season, he showed very consistent and high-end compete along with his athleticism. He also showed great maturity in a lot of tough games and clutch moments where he really put the team on his shoulders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>8th Round 155th Overall: (F) Cole Connolly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A late-September birthday, Connolly was drafted from the Nichols School Prep B 16U team. He hails from Tonawanda, New York, and is listed at 6\u20192\u201d, 176lbs. The right-shot forward put up an impressive 86 points (40G-46A) in 52 games of prep school action this season. He was teammates with current Spirit forward Sawyer Schmidt during the 2024-2025 season when the two were rostered with the Buffalo Junior Sabres 15U team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year, he was definitely a player that we were following along with the Jr. Sabres and that we wanted to continue to follow this year,\u201d said Range. \u201cHe\u2019s a much stronger player this year in terms of physical strength and it\u2019s really translating on the ice for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>9th Round, 167th Overall: (D) A.J. Foyt<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Foyt (FOY-t) was selected from Mount St. Charles Acadamy\u2019s 15U AAA team. In 62 games with the team, he recorded 51 points (7G-44A). Foyt is a left-shot defenseman from Carmel, Ind., who measures in at 5\u20199.5\u201d, 138lbs. He appeared at USA Hockey\u2019s Boy\u2019s Select 15 Player Development Camp this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt that he was a pretty dynamic defenseman. He creates a ton of offense by manipulating the other team,\u201d said eastern US scout Jeff Beauparlant. \u201cHe can see multiple levels in his passing game and we\u2019re pretty excited in where he can go. One of the big things is that his compete level continued to grow, and we know he does a lot of work away from the rink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>10th Round, 187th Overall: (D) Gryson Gill<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Gryson (gr-ICE-on) Gill was selected out of the York Simcoe Express U16 AAA team. He is a right-shot defenseman from Brooklin, Ont. who measures in at 6\u2019, 154lbs. He had 23 points (4G-19A) in 34 regular season games. Gill added an assist in ten playoff games for the Express and appeared in four games with them at the OHL Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe played on a real good team in York-Simcoe. Gryson really executes that first pass out of the zone and has some very quick feet,\u201d said OMHA scout Jamey Hicks. \u201cThere\u2019s no panic in his game, he plays with confidence, and I\u2019m excited to keep seeing him develop in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>13th Round 247th Overall: (F) Luke McLean<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>McLean (mick-LANE) was selected by Saginaw after playing with the Huron-Perth Lakers U16AAA team. The London, Ont. native stands 6\u2019, 159lbs and is right-handed. In 30 games with the Lakers, McLean tallied 9G-13A\u201422P in 2025-2026. He added a goal and an assist in eight ALLIANCE playoff games and skated in four OHL Cup games with Huron-Perth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought he really improved as the year went on,\u201d said ALLIANCE scout Adam Simpson. \u201cHe\u2019s a versatile, two-way forward and is a good athlete that we think is just going to get better. His aggressiveness, skating, and willingness to compete all improved. We think the puck skill and the offense will come in time, but he has a really strong foundation to work with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>14th Round, 267th Overall: (F) Hayden Ferra<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hayden Ferra (FAIR-uh) of Pittsburgh, Penn. was selected as Saginaw\u2019s 14th round pick. He spent the season with the Pittsburgh Predators 16U AAA team and recorded 45 points (18G-27A) in 54 games while recording 214 PIM. Ferra is a right-shot forward standing 5\u20199\u201d, 160lbs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a player we watched last year and that we had a lot of time for,\u201d said Assistant GM Brian Prout. \u201cWe continued to watch him as a reentry player this year. We loved his hard work, his energy level, and the way that he hunts pucks. When he gets the puck, he\u2019s a point-per-game player.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>15th Round, 287th Overall: (F) Daniel Vasko<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Saginaw\u2019s final pick in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection, Vasko is a right-shot forward from Scranton, Penn. His season was spent with the Wilkes-Barre\/Scranton Jr. Knights Premier 15\u2019s program where he scored 40 points (10G-30A) in 39 games. Vasko measured 5\u201911\u201d, 150lbs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s a player that we thought had a lot of upside. At that point in the draft, you\u2019re just trying to throw a dart, find a shooting star, find an elite quality, and we thought in this case it was a dart worth throwing. There are aspects of his game that we believe can really translate to the next level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The new Spirit prospects will now head to Saginaw and Bay City for development camp on June 20th and 21st. Bate, from Union, Ont., joins the Spirit from the London Jr. Knights U16 AAA program.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen pick five came in and Bate was still on the board, it was easy; put the pick in the computer, get the jersey, and get on stage,\u201d said Spirit GM Dave Drinkill. \u201cHe always produces. The important thing with him is that he expects himself to score. He puts it on his own shoulders to be the driver on the team and guys need that in order to be in our league.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bate led his Jr. Knights team in and ALLIANCE scoring with an impressive 72 points (34G-38A) in 27 games. He is a right-shot center standing in at 5\u201910.25, 163lbs. He led London in postseason scoring as well, with 7G-14A\u201421P in just eight ALLIANCE playoff games, and 7G-6A\u201413P in six games at the OHL Cup.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was nervous sitting in the stands but looking forward to whoever drafted me, and I\u2019m glad it was Saginaw,\u201d said Bate. \u201cI\u2019m a hardworking player who is super competitive and super offensive. I can\u2019t wait to get started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With the Jr. Knights, Bate was a champion at both the U15 (2025) and U16 (2026) level.
