The Spirit Fall To The Erie Otters To Begin Road Trip
The Spirit battled the Erie Otters for the first time this season on Wednesday night on the road.
The Otters scored first on a shorthanded goal that came off the stick of J.P. Labardo, with the assist going to Luke Cairns. Shortly after, the Otters struck again on a special teams goal when Connor Crisp scored a power play goal off a rebounded shot from defenseman Travis Wood, making the score 2-0 in Erie’s favor. The Otters scored one more shorthanded goal in the first period when center Luke Cairns beat Spirit goaltender Jake Paterson. The assist on Cairns’ goal went to Jake Evans, who sent Cairns a beautiful give-and-go pass up the middle. The first period ended with a score of 3-0 Otter lead.
The second period saw more Otter scoring as Hayden Hodgson scored his first career OHL goal off an assist from Luke Cairns and Connor Crisp. Spirit goaltender Jake Paterson had 11 saves off on 15 shots and was pulled early in the second and Nikita Serebryakov replaced him in net. Otters defensemen Jimmy McDowell scored his second goal this season assisted by Adam Pelech and Connon McDavid, making the score 5-0 in favor of the Otters. Connor Brown made it 6-0 when his pass in front of the net was deflected off a defenseman’s stick and beat Serebryakov. Assists on that goal went to Jimmy McDowell and Adam Pelech. The 2nd period closed with a score of 6-0 Erie with the lead.
Midway through the third period Erie would score one more time when J.P. Labardo buried his second goal of the game, this time unassisted. Saginaw got on the board late in the third and final period, on a goal off the stick of Jimmy Lodge, assisted by Buffalo Sabres prospect Justin Kea and Dalton Young. The Spirit outshot the Otters overall 35 – 34.
