Spirit Drop Otters 3-2 to Notch First Win of the Season
Spirit forward Vince Trocheck propelled Saginaw to their first win of the season Saturday night, scoring two goals in a 3-2 decision over the Erie Otters in Erie. Brandon Saad tallied his first OHL points in the game, a goal and an assist, while Ryan O’Connor earned two helpers and Mavric Parks turned aside 34 of 36 shots. With two games in the books Saginaw’s record stands at 1-1-0-0 with 2 points.
The Spirit opened scoring with a goal early in the first period. Newcomer Brandon Saad scored his first OHL career goal at the 5:33 mark on the power play. Tailing the assists were defenseman Matt Ashman and forward Ivan Telegin. The Erie Otters quickly answered back however, with defenseman Tyler Hostetter finding the net at the 7:36 mark courtesy assists from forwards Anthony Luciani and Mike Cazzola. The first period ended tied 1-1.
Spirit forward Vincent Trocheck notched a goal at 9:20 in the second period, advancing the Spirit lead 2-1. Saad and defenseman Ryan O’Connor assisted on the play. The back and forth action continued with Erie’s Luciani scoring at 19:30 in the second courtesy assists from forwards Greg McKegg and Cazzola. The two teams battled into the third period but it was the Spirit who edged out the Otters when Trocheck scored his second goal of the evening at the 16:18 mark, with the assists going to forward Jordan Szwarz and O’Connor.
Saginaw goalie Mavric Parks tallied 34 saves on 36 shots, while Erie’s goaltender earned 25 saves on 28 shots.
