Spirit Captain Vince Trocheck Wins Gold at WJC
Saginaw Spirit Captain Vince Trocheck and the rest of his Team USA teammates are in celebration mode after capturing the country’s third Gold Medal in history at the World Junior Hockey Championship earlier today. The Americans knocked of defending champion Sweden in the final in Russia 3-1, with Trocheck earning and a goal and an assist in the game, as his empty net effort late in the contest sealed top spot for Team USA. Trocheck, who is the second all-time leading point producer in Saginaw Spirit history, had a terrific showing at the tournament in all facets of his game including outstanding work in the faceoff circle and on the penalty kill. Team USA also got a brilliant performance by goaltender John Gibson of the Kitchener Rangers, who was the media’s selection as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Meantime, in the Bronze Medal game a disappointing outcome for Spirit goaltender Jake Paterson and Team Canada as they fell 6-5 in overtime to the host Russians in the third place game. The result for the Canadians ends the country’s 14 year medal run at the event.
The Saginaw Spirit embark on a seven game home stand at The Dow Event Center opening on Saturday, January 5th at 7:11 when Saginaw plays host to the Owen Sound Attack. The week wraps up on Sunday, January 6th in a 4:00 start against the Guelph Storm. Sunday’s game will be the first of two Spirit Faith Days presented by Causley Trucking.
