Statement from Spirit President & Managing Partner Craig Goslin
Saginaw Spirit President & Managing Partner Craig Goslin released the following statement today regarding the End of Return to Play Plans for the 2020-21 OHL Season:
Today is a tough day. As we continue to struggle with the COVID-19 virus and its variants throughout Ontario, Michigan and Pennsylvania, the day has come that we must cancel our efforts on Return to Play of the 2020-21 season and focus our attention on the 2021-22 season. We feel very badly for our players, coaches, billets, fans, sponsors and our community.
None of us could have anticipated what has occurred with the virus in the last 14 months, and certainly, not one member of the OHL Board of Governors wants to say “no” to our Return to Play plan for the sake of our players unless it became absolutely necessary. Our efforts have always been about the players and finding a way to return to play if there was one.
The league did an outstanding job as they reviewed all reasonable options with government and others. With this information, the decision was made that now is the time that we most unfortunately, as a board, had to vote to cancel the season.
We must now pivot our focus on supporting the young men on our roster and also on the 2021-2022 season. The Saginaw Spirit, the Dow Event Center in partnership with ASM Global, look forward to being a vital ingredient to the COVID-19 recovery process of the Great Lakes Bay Region and Riverfront Saginaw and once again become the region’s premier gathering place, once this virus is under control and behind us.
