[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Kitchener, Ont. \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>The Kitchener Rangers announced today that the club has signed forward Jacob Lukes to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.<\/p>\n

Lukes, a native of Elk Grove Village, Illinois, is a right-shot forward who most recently played with Team Illinois 16U AAA. The 2009-born forward is listed at 6-foot-0 and 174 pounds and is committed to Bowling Green State University for the 2027-28 season.<\/p>\n

\u201cJacob is a smart and skilled forward who put up great numbers with his team last year,\u201d said Kitchener Rangers General Manager Mike McKenzie. \u201cHe is a late bloomer who was passed over in the draft but has shown\u00a0big improvement\u00a0over the last year. He was recently among the final cuts for the Hlinka team as his game continues to grow. We are excited to welcome him and see him continue his development here in Kitchener.\u201d<\/p>\n

During the 2025-26 season with Team Illinois 16U AAA, Lukes recorded 86 points, including 26 goals and 60 assists, over 58 games. He also spent the 2024-25 season with Team Illinois 15U AAA, where he posted 42 points in 43 games.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe staff made a great impression on me, and I knew Kitchener was a place where I could grow as a player and person,\u201d said Jacob Lukes. \u201cI\u2019m excited to be part of this organization and help build on last season\u2019s success.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lukes was selected by the Chicago Steel in the eighth round, 124th overall, of the 2026 USHL Entry Draft and by the Idaho Falls Spud Kings in the third round, 47th overall, of the 2025 NCDC Futures Draft.<\/p>\n

Kitchener, Ontario \u2013<\/strong> The Kitchener Rangers announced a series of updates to the club’s Hockey Operations department ahead of the 2026-27 season.\u00a0 Michael Zsolt has been named Associate General Manager, while Brad Flynn has been promoted to Associate Coach. Brandon Merli has taken on the role of Director of Sports Science and Development.<\/p>\n

Michael Zsolt<\/strong> dons the new title of Associate General Manager after serving as the Assistant General Manager for the past five seasons. Michael originally joined the Rangers as the team\u2019s Director of Analytics in 2017. Since then, he has taken on the roles of Director of Hockey Operations (2019) and Assistant General Manager (2021). Michael will continue to be involved in all areas of hockey operations, including scouting, team management, player recruiting and player development. He will continue to oversee the team\u2019s use of analytics, which is closely integrated within all aspects of hockey operations. Michael is proud to have supported the development of others on the Rangers\u2019 analytics team, with multiple people having gone on to secure opportunities in professional sports across the NHL, MLB and NBA.<\/p>\n

Prior to his role with the Rangers, Michael acted as an analytics consultant to the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds during the 2016-2017 season, and previously completed project work for an NHL team. Michael has over a decade of professional experience, previously working in private equity investing and business strategy consulting after graduating from the Ivey Business School at Western University.<\/p>\n

Brad Flynn<\/strong> will serve under the title of Associate Coach, a title last held by current Head Coach, Jeff Kyrzakos. He will continue to lead the defensive core and assume penalty killing duties. The Kitchener Rangers have never finished below fourth place across the OHL in penalty kill percentage under Flynn, always producing at a clip above 80%. Finishing second during the 2025-26 season (81.1%) the Rangers also produced a Canadian Hockey League leading 19 shorthanded goals.<\/p>\n

Flynn, 41, came to Kitchener with an array of experience having coached in all three leagues in the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). Before Kitchener his most recent stop came with the Saginaw Spirit as Associate Coach in 2021-22. He spent three seasons as Assistant Coach with the Red Deer Rebels (2018-21) of the Western Hockey League (WHL) and one season as Assistant Coach with the Acadie\u2013Bathurst Titan (2015-16) of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).<\/p>\n

Impressively, Flynn has played a critical role in player development having worked with over 20 current National Hockey League (NHL) players, including two first-round draft picks, Alexander Alexeyev (2018 round 1, 31st overall by Washington Capitals) and Pavel Mintyukov (2022 round 1, 10th overall by Anaheim Ducks).<\/p>\n

Brandon Merli<\/strong> is preparing for his 25th season with the Kitchener Rangers. Four as a player and 21st in the front office. Merli has added the role of Director of Player Development to his title making his new official title, Director of Sports Science and Player Development.<\/p>\n

Brandon is in charge of all aspects of fitness such as strength training, conditioning training, and nutrition. He will also headman additional on-ice training for the players throughout the season. Brandon has worked with a wide variety of clients, ranging from fitness beginners to professional athletes.<\/p>\n

KITCHENER, ON<\/strong> \u2013 The Kitchener Rangers announced today that former Rangers goaltender Jake Paterson has joined the club\u2019s coaching staff as Goalie Coach and Video Coach.<\/p>\n

\u201cJake will be a great addition to our organization and fits the mold of our last two goalie coaches who ended up being very successful and moving onto professional hockey,\u201d said Kitchener Rangers General Manager Mike McKenzie. \u201cHe has experience playing in the league, playing pro and is also a Rangers alumus. He understands what it takes and the highs and lows of being a goaltender at this level. We are excited to welcome back Jake to the Rangers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paterson returns to Kitchener after a playing career that included time in the Ontario Hockey League, American Hockey League, ECHL, Norway (Sparta Sarpsborg) and Slovakia (HKM Zvolen). A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Paterson was selected by the Detroit Red Wings in the third round, 80th overall, of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.<\/p>\n

Paterson played in the OHL with the Saginaw Spirit and Kitchener Rangers, appearing in 26 regular-season games for Kitchener during the 2014-15 season and posting a 14-10-2 record with a 2.37 goals-against average, .929 save percentage and two shutouts. He was also named to Hockey Canada\u2019s World Junior\u2019s Team in 2013 and 2014, finishing in fourth place on both occasions.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m very excited to return to the Kitchener Rangers as the Director Of Goaltending,” said Jake Paterson. “It\u2019s an amazing opportunity to be part of such a great organization. I\u2019m looking forward to helping our goalies develop both on and off the ice, and can\u2019t wait to get started.”<\/p>\n

In addition to his playing experience, Paterson brings a coaching background that includes work with goaltenders at the professional, junior and minor hockey levels. Through Paterson Goaltending, he has provided on-ice instruction, game review, video coaching, preparation and performance coaching for athletes across the region.<\/p>\n

Paterson spent the past two seasons as a Goaltending Coach in the GOHL. He spent the 2024-25 season with the Elmira Sugar Kings and the 2025-26 season with the Listowel Cyclones.<\/p>\n

KITCHENER, Ont.<\/strong> \u2014 The Kitchener Rangers announced today that alumnus Nick Spaling has been named Assistant Coach completing Jeff Kyrzakos’ staff behind the bench for the 2026-27 season.<\/p>\n

\u201cNick is a well-known and popular Rangers alum that understands the history and importance of what this team means to the community,\u201d said Mike McKenzie, General Manager of the Kitchener Rangers. \u201cHe has a wealth of knowledge from his OHL and NHL playing days that will help our players develop on and off the ice. He is coming off a championship season in Cambridge. We are thrilled to welcome back Nick to the Rangers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spaling returns to the organization after a standout playing career that included three seasons with the Kitchener Rangers, seven seasons in the National Hockey League, and two seasons in Switzerland\u2019s National League. A Palmerston, Ontario native, Spaling was selected by Kitchener in the sixth round of the 2005 OHL Priority Selection out of the Waterloo Wolves U16 AAA program before being drafted by the Nashville Predators in the second round, 58th overall, of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe opportunity to come back and be a part of an organization that has given me and means so much to me is beyond exciting,\u201d said Nick Spaling. \u201cI\u2019m looking forward to joining Jeff, Brad and the whole staff and the great culture they have created here and Can\u2019t wait to get started.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his time in Kitchener, Spaling helped lead the Rangers to the 2008 OHL Championship and a berth in the Memorial Cup final. He recorded 156 points across three regular seasons with the club and added 30 points during the 2008 OHL Playoffs. He later appeared in 437 NHL games with Nashville, Pittsburgh, Toronto and San Jose. Spaling also spent time in Europe playing two seasons with Gen\u00e8ve-Servette HC and represented Team Canada at the 2016-17 Spengler Cup Tournament.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re thrilled to add Nick to our staff,\u201d said Head Coach Jeff Kyrzakos. \u201cHis playing experience speaks for itself. Being local and an alum who understands our community is huge. He will bring so many elements that help our hockey club and we\u2019re looking forward to working with him every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spaling joins the Rangers coaching staff after serving as an assistant coach with the Cambridge RedHawks in the GOHL where they crowned Sutherland Cup Champions. Spaling will lead the forward group while also taking responsibility over the power play.<\/p>\n

Kitchener, Ont. \u2014<\/strong> The Kitchener Rangers announced today that Jeff Kyrzakos has been named the 26th Head Coach in franchise history.<\/p>\n

Kyrzakos steps into the role after serving as the Rangers\u2019 Associate Coach and Assistant General Manager over the past three seasons. Since joining Kitchener in 2023, he has played an important role in the club\u2019s player development, game preparation, and day-to-day hockey operations while having a focus on the forward group and power play. Kyrzakos played a pivotal role in guiding the Kitchener Rangers to their fifth OHL Championship and third Memorial Cup Championship in franchise history, winning both for the first time in his coaching career.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are excited for Jeff to become the 26th Head Coach in Ranger History,\u201d said Kitchener Rangers General Manager, Mike McKenzie. \u201cHe has been an integral part of our staff for the last three years and has a wealth of experience in the OHL. We feel he is the right person to lead our hockey club moving forward. I look forward to working with Jeff and seeing him take this step in his coaching career.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prior to arriving in Kitchener, Kyrzakos spent seven seasons with the Mississauga Steelheads as Assistant General Manager and Assistant Coach, helping guide the organization through a strong period of player advancement and team success. He was behind the bench when Mississauga captured both the Central Division and Eastern Conference titles during the 2016-17 season, and he contributed to the development of numerous players selected in the NHL Draft.<\/p>\n

“On behalf of the Kitchener Rangers Hockey Club, I want to congratulate Jeff Kyrzakos on his well-earned promotion to Head Coach,” said Chief Operating Officer and Governor, Joe Birch. “Jeff is an outstanding person whose character, integrity, and professionalism have earned the respect of everyone in our organization. He is a tremendous communicator who builds strong relationships with his players and staff, and his experience and leadership have made a significant impact on our hockey club. Throughout his time with the Rangers, Jeff has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to player development and creating an environment where our athletes can succeed both on and off the ice. He has the trust and respect of our players, and we are confident he is the right leader to guide our team into the future. A Mississauga, Ontario native, Kyrzakos brings experience as a player and coach. He played at Western Michigan University before joining the Owen Sound Attack, where he recorded 79 points in 64 games during the 2005-06 OHL season. He later played seven seasons of professional hockey before beginning his coaching career with the Arizona Sundogs in 2013.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel extremely privilege to have this opportunity,\u201d said Jeff Kyrzakos. \u201cThe Rangers are an historic organization that I always admired from afar prior to coming here. Having been here for three seasons – my appreciation for the organization, the history and our fans has grown. The people who work here are some of the best. I moved here a year ago and I love being a part of this community. I can\u2019t wait to get started. Thanks to Joe Birch, Mike McKenzie and Jussi Ahokas for bringing me in here three years ago, and for the opportunity that lies ahead. I want to wish both Jussi Ahokas and Jordan Dekort the best of luck. We will miss them as coaches but more importantly as people. Lastly, I look forward to continuing to work with Brad Flynn and Brandon Merli who have each played integral roles in building the great foundation of this organization over our years here in Kitchener. I am very appreciative of the work they put in every day to make this team the best it can be.\u201d<\/p>\n

CALGARY, Alberta<\/strong> \u2013 Hockey Canada has unveiled the 32 players that have been invited to the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase, set for July 26-Aug. 1 <\/span>at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, Ontario.<\/p>\n

Four goaltenders, 10 defencemen and 18 forwards will take part in practices, scrimmages and a trio of exhibition games against Finland, Sweden and the United States in preparation for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship, Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The camp roster features eight players who are eligible to return from Canada\u2019s 2026 National Junior Team (Carels, Cootes, Desnoyers, Ivankovic, Martin, Reid<\/strong>, Reschny, Verhoeff) and 17 players who have won gold at the IIHF U18 Men\u2019s World Championship (Carels, Cootes, Czata, Desnoyers, Hopkins, Huang, Ivankovic, Lin, Martin, Nesbitt, Reschny, Roobroeck, Rudolph, Schmidt, Smith, Verhoeff, Villeneuve). Landon DuPont (Calgary, AB\/Everett, WHL) was invited to participate in the World Junior Summer Showcase but will play for Canada’s National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup instead.<\/p>\n

The player selection process was led by Alan Millar (Tottenham, ON), general manager of the National Junior Team, alongside Byron Bonora (Brooks, AB), Program of Excellence (POE) head scout, and Dave Brown (Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON\/Erie, OHL), assistant general manager of the National Junior Team. Scott Salmond (Creston, BC), Hockey Canada\u2019s senior vice-president of high performance and hockey operations, and Benoit Roy (Sudbury, ON), director of hockey operations, also provided input.<\/p>\n

“We’re excited to announce the 32 players who will attend the World Junior Summer Showcase in Windsor as we begin our preparation for the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship,\u201d said Millar. \u201cThis is an important opportunity for our staff to evaluate a talented group of players against top international competition while continuing to build our identity as a team. We’re looking forward to seeing this group compete and bringing this showcase to Windsor in front of passionate Canadian hockey fans.”<\/p>\n

The team will practice July 27 and 28 before taking on Sweden on July 29, Finland on July 30 and the United States on Aug. 1. KITCHENER, ONT.<\/strong> \u2014 The Kitchener Rangers announced today that Head Coach Jussi Ahokas will be leaving the organization to accept the Head Coach position with the Colorado Eagles, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche.<\/p>\n

Ahokas departs Kitchener following one of the most successful three-year stretches in Rangers\u2019 history. Since being named the 25th head coach in franchise history in July 2023, the Oulu, Finland native guided the club to a combined regular-season record of 135-52-13-4, including three straight 40-win seasons and consecutive 100-point campaigns for the first time in franchise history. Ahokas was the Matt Leyden Trophy recipient in 2024-25 which is awarded to the Ontario Hockey League’s Coach of the Year becoming the first Rangers Head Coach to take home that award since the 1988-89 season (Joe McDonnell) and was the third Rangers Head Coach in team history to earn such honour.<\/p>\n

Under Ahokas, the Rangers never finished below fourth place in the Western Conference and captured the 2025-26 OHL Championship before going 4-0-0-0 at the Memorial Cup in Kelowna, BC to win junior hockey’s most prestigious trophy for the third time in franchise history. Ahokas made history as he became the first European head coach to win both an OHL Championship and a Memorial Cup.<\/p>\n

Jussi Ahokas was a pioneer for European coaches at the junior level in Canada becoming the first European to coach in the Canadian Hockey League, creating another pathway on route to the professional level in our sport.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we hired Jussi three years ago, he always said his goal was to move on to pro hockey and try to reach his goal of coaching in the NHL,\u201d said Kitchener Rangers General Manager Mike McKenzie. \u201cWhile we will miss him in Kitchener, we are happy that he is one step closer to that goal and we were able to play a small role in it. We would like to thank Jussi for his dedication and contributions to our club and wish him the best in Colorado.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ahokas\u2019 Rangers teams posted regular-season records of 41-23-4-0<\/strong> in 2023-24, 47-15-4-2<\/strong> in 2024-25 and 47-14-5-2<\/strong> in 2025-26. His 135 regular-season victories rank fourth in franchise history, trailing only Peter DeBoer (297), Joe McDonell (226), and Steve Spott (187), while his .703 points percentage is the best mark by a head coach in Rangers history.<\/p>\n

In the postseason, Ahokas led Kitchener to a 32-16 playoff record across three seasons, including a 16-2-0-0 run to the 2025-26 OHL Championship and a perfect 4-0-0-0 record at the Memorial Cup.<\/p>\n

Jussi Ahokas shared he thoughts on what coaching in Kitchener meant to him and what he will remember most:<\/p>\n

“I want to thank Joe Birch, Mike McKenzie, and the Kitchener Rangers organization for giving me a chance to coach in the Ontario Hockey League and for this historic franchise. Their belief in me allowed me to reach the goals we set as a group. I also need to thank my staff, Jeff Kyrzakos, Brad Flynn, Jordan DeKort, Brandon Merli, and our support staff.<\/p>\n

What I will remember in Kitchener is the great people, great organization. I can\u2019t be more happy that I made the choice to come to Kitchener. I got to work with unbelievable staff, unbelievable organization, and we got our goal which was to win and we got it done. That\u2019s why I wanted to move on because kind of we did what I came here to do and all-in-all I can\u2019t thank more Kitchener, the city, the fans, and the whole community.<\/p>\n

It has been great three years for me and I will never forget it.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Before joining the Rangers, Ahokas built one of the most decorated coaching r\u00e9sum\u00e9s in European hockey. He was named the Alliance of European Hockey Clubs\u2019 2019-20 Coach of the Year and earned the Kalevi Numminen Trophy as Liiga Coach of the Year after guiding Kouvola KooKoo to a 110-point season. Internationally, Ahokas led Finland to gold medals at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship and the 2016 IIHF World U18 Championship.<\/p>\n

Kitchener, Ont. \u2013<\/strong> The Kitchener Rangers announced today that the club has signed 2026 first-round CHL Import Draft selection (55th overall), Roman Andreev, to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.<\/p>\n

\u201cRoman is a big scoring forward that is extremely skilled and has a high-end shot,\u201d said General Manager, Mike McKenzie. \u201cHe is a threat anytime he has the puck. We look forward to seeing him in a Ranger uniform.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andreev (2010) is a six-foot-one, 201-pound forward from Moscow, Russia who has a knack for finding the back of the net. In 18 games at the Russia U16 level, Andreev produced 21 points, scoring 16 goals and adding five assists. He also impressed at the U18 level in a small sample size recording just under three points-per-game with 11 points (5G, 6A) in four games. Andreev represented Russia on the international stage with the U16 program featuring in four games while scoring six goals and one assist. At the Russia Cup (U16), Andreyev continued to produce scoring 16 times in 24 games, while adding 11 assists.<\/p>\n

New this season, CHL teams were permitted to draft 16-year old skaters in the Import Draft (Round 1 only). Andreev brings size and scoring ability to the Rangers\u2019 forward group. He developed in the Dynamo Moskva program and is eligible for the 2028 NHL Draft.<\/p>\n

Andreev becomes just the seventh Russian-born skater to play for the Kitchener Rangers joining Alexei Lipanov (2018-19), Dimitrii Sergeev (2013-2016) who was selected in the first round (23rd overall) in the 2013 CHL Import Draft, Alexei Dostoinov (2007-2009), Maxim Sharifijanov (1999-00), Ruslan Akhmadulin (1999-00) who was selected in the first round (10th overall) in the 1999 CHL Import Draft, and Sergei Olympiev (1993-1995). Danny Zhilkin was born in Moscow, Russia, but plays international competitions under the nation of Canada.<\/p>\n
