Rangers sign goaltender Owen Edwards
Kitchener, Ont. – The Kitchener Rangers announced today they have signed goaltender Owen Edwards to an OHL scholarship and development agreement with the club.
“We would like to welcome Owen to the Rangers,” said Kitchener Rangers General Manager, Mike McKenzie. He will provide us with depth in the goaltending position and has the ability to be a very good goalie in our league as he matures and gets older. Owen will play with the Elmira Sugar Kings this season and we look forward to seeing him make the jump to junior hockey.”
The Rangers selected Edwards in the sixth round, 111th overall, of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection. Edwards currently plays for the Elmira Sugar Kings in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League (GOJHL). A native of Oshawa, Ont., he grew up playing in Whitby. Last season, he recorded a 1.42 goals-against average (GAA) and three shut-outs for the Whitby Wildcats U16 AAA team. This past spring at the OHL Cup Edwards registered a 2.02 GAA and .919 save percentage (SV%) in his two appearances (1-1-0).
“I feel really blessed to have this opportunity,” said Edwards. “There is a really great group of guys in that locker room and the coaches are so welcoming. I’m excited to play for Kitchener one day.”
The 6.02 goaltender joined the Rangers for practice on Saturday, September 9th, and suited up in Oshawa on September 10th for the Rangers’ fourth pre-season game. Edwards took to the net for the third period against the Generals where he saw five shots in the Rangers’ 11-3 win over Oshawa. Edwards will wear number 31 for Kitchener.
