Rangers Join The Pink Shirt Movement
Bullying behaviour has been a long standing concern in Waterloo Region. Together, the Kitchener Rangers and the Waterloo Region Record’s Newspapers in Education has identified the need to address this concern and are committed to promoting safer schools and a positive learning environment.
The Rangers through the Newspapers in Education program have provided elementary grades in Waterloo Region the opportunity to take part in the serial story Solving Damian Dermite which deals sensitively with the subject of bullying and is accompanied by 1-6 grade level curriculum. The Rangers and Newspapers in Education asked you to join the Pink Shirt movement. Thousands of people in our community came together for Pink Shirt Day on February 29th, 2012. They wore pink to symbolize that we as a society will not tolerate bullying.
Pink Shirt Day was inspired by a 2007 incident in Nova Scotia where a Grade 9 boy was bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt on his first day of school. Other students rallied in support of the bullied student and the movement was born.
