Mascherin’s career night sails Rangers past Petes
Adam Mascherin scored a career high four goals to lead the Kitchener Rangers to their fourth straight win, a 5-4 overtime victory over the Peterborough Petes in Ontario Hockey League play on New Years Day.
Mascherin also set a new career-high of 14 straight games with a point, registering 17 goals and 11 assists for 28 points during his current streak.
Luke Richardson earned his fourth straight win in goal for the Rangers, turning aside 28 of 32 shots faced.
Dylan Wells suffered the loss, allowing five goals on 40 Rangers’ shots.
Nick Isaacson’s first goal of the season gave the Petes a 1-0 lead at 16:14 of the first period, assisted by Nikita Korostelev.
It was the lone goal of the period, which saw Kitchener outshoot Peterborough, 11-8.
A four-goal second period went by way of the Rangers, as Mascherin tallied his first of the game, from Kole Sherwood, just 1:08 into the frame.
Sherwood would notch his 14th of the season just 3:07 later, giving the Rangers a 2-1 lead on the power play, from Joseph Garreffa, at 4:15.
Near the midway point of the period Logan DeNoble tied the game, 2-2, from Cole Fraser, but at 15:21 Mascherin’s second of the game put Kitchener up 3-2. Garreffa and Sherwood earned the assists on the goal which rounded out second period scoring with Kitchener holding a 26-19 shot advantage.
It was the Petes who would strike quickly in the third period, as Korostelev scored his 15th of the season, from Isaacson and Semyon Der-Arguchintsev at 5:56 to tie the game.
Just 29 seconds later Matthew Timms tallied his second goal of the season to give the Petes a 4-3 lead from Jonathan Ang and Bobby Dow at 6:25.
From thereon out it was all Mascherin, as the winger scored the game tying goal at 12:09 of the third period, from Giovanni Vallati and Kyle Gentles, which sent the game to extra time.
Peterborough outshot Kitchener 13-12 in the third period of play, but the Blueshirts led 38-32 after regulation.
Mascherin’s game winner – and 28th of the season – came at 2:37 of overtime, from Garreffa and Greg Meireles. Final shots on goal favoured Kitchener 40-32.
The Rangers finished the game 1-for-2 on the power play, while Peterborough was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
Kole Sherwood (KIT) (3), Nikita Korostelev (PBO) (2), and Adam Mascherin (KIT) (1) were selected as the Three Stars of the Game.
Connor Hall, Adam Mascherin, and Logan Stanley each wore an “A” and skated as alternates to Rangers’ captain Connor Bunnaman.
The Rangers face off against another Eastern Conference opponent, the Barrie Colts, on Tuesday, January 2 at 7pm back home at The Aud.
