FINAL (SO): Rangers 3, Sting 4
The Kitchener Rangers hosted the Sarnia Sting at The Aud for a Tuesday night matchup. We were looking to build off a big weekend against London and Owen Sound.
53 seconds into the game, Reid Valade scored his 15th goal of the season as the Rangers jumped out to the early 1-0 lead. Six minutes later, Sarnia would tie the game 1-1. We were able to kill off two penalties in the back half of the period to keep the game at 1-1. The Rangers would start the 2nd on a powerplay and looked to capitalize.
The Rangers had two powerplay opportunities at the beginning of the 2nd but were unable to score on either one. In a penalty-filled period, both teams exchanged multiple powerplays but neither were successful. Late in the frame, Sarnia would jump out to a 2-1 lead. We would look to bounce back in the 3rd.
Just past the midway point of the period, Sarnia capitalized on a powerplay, giving them a 3-1 lead. With six minutes remaining, Simon Motew snapped a shot in from the point, getting us back within one goal. With Pavel Cajan pulled for the extra attacker, Mitchell Martin tipped a shot from the point to tie the game at 3-3. For the second game in a row, we were headed to overtime.
Both teams had their fair share of overtime chances but neither scored, meaning the game was going to a shootout. Ty Voit scored the shootout winner for the Sting. We earned an important point in a 4-3 loss to the Sting and looked for a rematch on Friday.
Our next game is Friday, February 18th at 7:05 p.m. in Sarnia.
