Carty backstops Rangers to 3-1 road win over Colts
Ryan MacInnis and Adam Mascherin each had a goal and an assist as the Kitchener Rangers earned their third straight win, a 3-1 decision over the Barrie Colts at the Barrie Molson Centre on Saturday night.
Mascherin now extends his point streak to eight games (7-5=12) to start the OHL season, while rookie defenceman Elijah Roberts picked up his first OHL point with an assist on the MacInnis goal.
Dawson Carty registered his second win of the season for the Rangers (5-0-3-0) and the Colts (5-4-0-0) made him work for it, as the veteran netminder faced 37 shots on the night, stopping 36.
“Going in, it’s one of those games you know you’re going to see a lot of shots,” Carty said post-game. “But being busy like that helps you get into a groove, and I felt good tonight.”
“They’re a high scoring team, so to keep them to just one goal and steal two points in a tough rink like this one is big for us and our momentum heading into tomorrow to finish off the weekend.”
Rangers head coach Mike Van Ryn once again praised the sturdy work of Carty between the pipes, especially when the team struggled to fend off the pressing Colts offence midway through the game.
“Carts kept us in it in the second period. It got sloppy on our side for a bit in that period, but we managed to come back and regroup in the third.”
“Our big guys rose to the occasion tonight. It was good to see, but now it’s on to tomorrow. It’s a busy weekend, but it’s a mental battle of who wants it more. Hopefully our guys come to play tomorrow.”
Jake Henderson got the Rangers on the board early with his third goal of the season at 3:49 of the first period from MacInnis and Connor Bunnaman. Colts centre Andrew Mangiapane tied things up at 1-1 with just 2:53 remaining in the frame, assisted by Michael Webster to close out the first period scoring. Shots were 9-8 in favour of the Colts.
The Colts took command of the second period, outshooting the Rangers 19-6, but the score remained tied through 40 minutes. It was MacInnis who regained Kitchener’s one-goal lead just 1:55 into the third period, assisted by Roberts and Mascherin. It was Mascherin who then secured the Rangers victory, putting his team up 3-1 with just 3:16 remaining on the clock.
Mackenzie Blackwood took the loss for the Colts in goal, allowing three goals on 24 shots. Final shots were 37-24 Barrie.
Special teams were at a stalemate on Saturday, as both teams went 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
David Miller left Friday night’s game versus the Owen Sound Attack in the third period and did not dress tonight.
MacInnis, Frank Hora and Brian Brosnan each wore ‘A’s and skated as assistant captains for the game.
Mangiapane (3), MacInnis (2) and Carty (1) were chosen as the Three Stars of the game.
The Rangers finish off their three-in-three weekend on Sunday when they take on the Guelph Storm at the Sleeman Centre at 6pm.
