On Friday, January 31, the Peterborough Petes were in Brampton to complete a home and home with the Brampton Steelheads. Peterborough was looking to tie the season series with the Steelheads after Brampton skated to a 4-3 victory at the PMC last night. Easton Rye was in net for the Petes, making his first appearance in three games.
After Brampton got on the board first, Peterborough responded a minute and a half later. In the wake of drawing a penalty, Braydon McCallum banked the puck off of former Pete Stevie Leskovar and into the net.
The game would stay tied at 1-1 for eight minutes, before Martin Matejicek gave Peterborough the lead, beating Steelheads goaltender Jack Ivankovic from the point to make it 2-1. Just 21 seconds later, Brady Stonehouse scored on a beautiful diving effort to double the Petes lead.
Brampton would get within one in the final minute of the first, before tying the game at the 14:21 mark of the middle frame, setting up an important third period with the score tied at 3-3.
The Petes came out big in the third, ready to push for the win. Halfway through the period, both Caden Taylor and Colin Fitzgerald extended their point streaks to four, scoring two minutes apart to give Peterborough a 5-3 lead. Brampton would add a goal late with the goalie pulled, but that’s all Easton Rye would allow, stopping multiple big chances to secure the Petes 5-4 win.
Caden Taylor led the way for the Petes with a goal and an assist, while Aiden Young and Rio Kaiser both had two assists. Braydon McCallum, Martin Matejicek, Brady Stonehouse, and Colin Fitzgerald all scored, as Jonathan Melee, Blake Gowan, Liam Ladds, and Nico Addy each had an assist. Easton Rye stopped 37/41 for his eighth win of the season, being named first star of the game in the process.
