On Saturday, February 8, the Peterborough Petes traveled to Sarnia for a weekend battle with the Sarnia Sting. Peterborough was looking to end a three in three on a strong note, after falling to Flint on Thursday and London last night. Last time the two teams met was on December 1, when Caden Taylor scored in overtime to give the Petes a 2-1 win. Easton Rye was back in net for the second consecutive night, after stopping 35 in London..
The first period would be all Sting, taking a 1-0 lead while also holding the Petes to only three shots through 20 minutes.
After a tough start, the Petes would come out strong early in the second. It all started 1:26 into the period. With a man advantage, Colin Fitzgerald sent a beautiful pass to Francis Parish. Parish beat Sting goaltender Evan Maillett to tie the game up at 1-1. Under two minutes later, on another powerplay, Parish found the back of the net once again. The goal was Parish’s fifth of the season, while also giving him his first multi-goal game of his OHL career. After two, Peterborough would lead 2-1.
The Sting would come back and tie the game in the third, sending it to overtime. Peterborough had three big chances to win the game in OT, but Maillett came up big, keeping the Sting in the game.
With northing coming from extra time, the game went to a shootout. After Caden Taylor and Colin Fitzgerald capitalized, Edmonton Oilers prospect Brady Stonehouse found himself with chance to win the game. Stonehouse made no mistake, beating Maillett five-hole to win it for the Petes by a score of 3-2.
Francis Parish led the way for the Petes, scoring his fourth and fifth goals of the season. Colin Fitzgerald had two assists, while Aiden Young and Carson Cameron had one assist each. Easton Rye stopped 25/27 and two in the shootout to pick up his ninth win of the season.
