Matejicek Scores as Otters Beat Petes
On Saturday, January 18, the Peterborough Petes hosted the Erie Otters for Nintendo Night at the PMC. The Petes were looking to bounce back at home, after a tough shutout loss at the hands of the Soo Greyhounds on Thursday. The loss to the Soo was only the third time that the Petes have been shutout this season, with their offence looking to get back on track against Erie. Jonathan Melee would be hungry to get back on the scoresheet, after being held goalless on Thursday for the first time since January 3. Reigning OHL Goaltender of the Week Easton Rye was back in net for the Petes, looking for his eighth win of the season.
The Petes came out strong in the game, dominating the play in the early minutes. Unfortunately for the Maroon and White, the Otters would get on the board first after a collision lead to a 2 on 0 shorthanded break. The Otters goal would be the only offence in the first, as they took a 1-0 lead into the break.
The Otters would extend their lead early in the second on a powerplay goal by Chicago Blackhawks prospect Martin Misiak. The Petes would have a couple chances to get on the board in the period, but Otters goaltender Charlie Burns was up to the task, keeping the score 2-0 Erie heading into the final frame.
The third period would not be kind to the Petes. Erie added three straight goals to take a commanding 5-0 lead with under 10 minutes remaining. Martin Matejicek would score his fifth goal of the season late, getting the Petes on the board for the first time in two games. As the buzzer sounded, the Otters took this one by a score of 5-1.
Martin Matejicek scored the lone goal for the Petes, with Gavin Bryant and Nico Addy picking up an assist each. Easton Rye made 32 saves in the loss.
