Gowan Scores First Career Goal as Petes Beat Sting in Overtime
The annual Teddy Bear Toss presented by Rexall returned to the PMC on Thursday, December 5, as the Peterborough Petes hosted the Sarnia Sting in front of their third straight sold-out crowd. The Petes were looking for two wins in a row on home ice, after a thrilling overtime win against the Niagara IceDogs on Sunday. Petes OA forward Gavin Bryant enjoyed a breakout performance in the game, scoring twice and adding an assist against his former team.
Thursday was a milestone night for Petes OA forward Ryder McIntyre, who was skating in his 200th OHL game against the team that drafted him. Easton Rye was back in net for the Petes, looking to build off a strong 33 save performance in Sunday’s win.
The game would stay scoreless until the final minute of the second period. Taking advantage of a power play, Sarnia leading scorer Tyson Doucette blasted a shot past Rye to make it 1-0 Sting heading into the break.
Eight minutes into the final frame, Petes fans were starting to worry as they clutched their teddy bears in their hands. Luckily for them, Blake Gowan came to the rescue, scoring a beautiful goal to send the bears flying. The goal was a milestone for Gowan, as it was his first OHL goal.
After Gowan’s goal, donations of stuffed animals, toques, gloves, and socks flooded the ice. The donations were picked up and counted by Chemong Home Hardware Building Centre. In total, 1571 donations were collected in support of the Move 99.7 and Pure Country 105 Christmas Toy Drive, in support of the Salvation Army’s Annual Christmas Appeal.
Peterborough fed off of the momentum from the sold-out Petes faithful. Just two minutes later, Aiden Young scored to put the Maroon and White ahead 2-1. In the final minute, Sarnia pulled their goaltender, desperate to find an equalizer. They would do just that on Doucette’s second goal of the game, tying it up at 2-2 and sending it overtime.
During the extra frame, Peterborough would find themselves on the power play. With the extra man, Braydon McCallum found Caden Taylor who lit the lamp, winning the game by a score of 3-2.
Blake Gowan scored his first career OHL goal on the night, while Aiden Young and Caden Taylor (OT winner) also scored. Brennan Faulkner, Liam Ladds, Ryder McIntyre, Colin Fitzgerald, Braydon McCallum, and Carson Cameron all had an assist. Easton Rye stopped 26/28 for his third win of the season.
