GAME RECAP: Fitzgerald Scores Twice in Petes Loss to Battalion
On Thursday, October 3, the Peterborough Petes hosted the North Bay Battalion for their annual Pride night presented by Circul-Air Corp. The game was the Petes fifth straight sell-out dating back to last season.
Peterborough wore Pride themed jerseys for the game, which are currently being auctioned off with proceeds in support of Sport A Rainbow. Fans interested in placing a bid can do so by clicking here. The auction closes at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, October 6.
It was a dream start at home for the Petes, who were looking to get on the board early after only scoring two goals in their first two games. Only 50 seconds into the game, 2024 third overall pick and Peterborough native Colin Fitzgerald fired home a one-timer from Ryder McIntyre for his first career OHL goal.
The goal gave Peterborough some momentum, putting the pressure on North Bay early. Five minutes later, on the power play, Quinton Pagé buried his first goal of the season to extend the Petes lead to 2-0.
Peterborough wasn’t done there. Two minutes after that, Fitzgerald struck once again, scoring a beautiful goal to give the Petes a 3-0 lead.
Down 3-0 early, the Battalion called a timeout after the Petes third goal to calm down. The timeout seemed to change the tide as just seconds later they would get on the board with Kent Greer’s first OHL goal. They would add one more before the break, cutting the deficit to one heading into the second period.
In the second, North Bay would tie the game up with 6:48 left in the period on a goal by Lirim Amidovski. The Battalion continued to put on the pressure, but Zach Bowen came up huge, making multiple highlight reel saves to keep it tied going into period three.
Eight minutes into the third period, North Bay took the lead after a giveaway sprung Ethan Procyszyn on a break. The Petes pressed hard, but the Battalion added an empty netter to win the game by a score of 5-3.
Colin Fitzgerald led the way for the Petes, scoring his first two OHL goals on the night. Quinton Pagé also scored, while Ryder McIntyre, Blake Gowan, Martin Matejicek, Jonathan Melee, Chase Lefebvre, and Braydon McCallum all picked up an assist. Zach Bowen stopped 32/36, making multiple highlight reel saves in the loss.
