Bryant Scores in Overtime as Petes Beat Generals 4-3 at Home
On Thursday, December 12, the Peterborough Petes hosted the Oshawa Generals at the PMC in front of their ninth sell-out of the season for Rivalry Night presented by Brant Basics. It was the fifth meeting between the two teams this season, with the Petes still looking for their first win against the rival Generals.
It was the Petes who struck first on the night, taking a 1-0 lead on a shorthanded goal by Jonathan Melee six minutes into the game. That would be the only goal in the opening frame as Peterborough took a 1-0 lead into the break.
The second would begin with the Maroon and White extending their lead. After Melee’s second goal was called back for an offside, Colin Fitzgerald got in on the action, scoring on a rebound to make it 2-0. Three minutes later, the Generals would get one back on a goal by Zackary Sandhu, cutting the Petes lead to one. The Generals momentum would only last for two minutes, with Martin Matejicek scoring his third goal in two games to restore Peterborough’s two goal lead. The lead would stay intact heading into the final frame.
The third period would be all Oshawa, with the Generals scoring twice in the first 10 minutes to tie the game at 3-3. A couple massive saves by Easton Rye and Oshawa goaltender Isaac Gravelle would keep the game tied late, sending it to overtime. Forty nine seconds into the extra frame, Gavin Bryant put the game away, scoring his second OT goal of the season, winning the game by a score of 4-3.
Martin Matejicek led the way for the Petes with a goal and an assist, while Braydon McCallum picked up two assists. Jonathan Melee, Colin Fitzgerald, and Gavin Bryant all scored, as Blake Gowan and Aiden Young each had an assist. Easton Rye stopped 34/37 for his fourth straight win.
