This selection marks a huge milestone in the Otters development process and brings plenty of excitement around the organization heading into a landmark season of Otters hockey with the team celebrating their 30th season in the Ontario Hockey League.

This will mark the fourth time in team history that the Otters have held the second overall pick with the last time coming in 2022 when Erie drafted Malcolm Spence. The Mississauga native having a strong three seasons in the Flagship City, playing a huge part in Erie’s return to the postseason over the past two seasons, wearing an ‘A’ as alternate captain and scoring over 32 goals in 2024-25 before heading to the University of Michigan for the 2025-26 season. Spence’s time in Erie saw him selected in the second round of the NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers in 2025.

The other two times Erie picked second, they selected Greg McKegg in 2008 and Dylan Strome in 2013. McKegg played in Erie for parts of four OHL seasons, playing in over 230 games, where he captained the Otters for two of them, including a hard-fought 2010-11 season where he scored 49 goals. McKegg was selected in the third round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and has gone on to play over 230 games in the National Hockey League. Strome was the heart and soul to Erie’s four-straight 50-win seasons, taking part in all of them. Strome played in over 200 games for the Otters and was also the captain of the 2015-16 Otters. A postseason hero, Strome would tally 34 points on his way to leading Erie to their second OHL championship. Erie’s all-time leading scorer would be picked third overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and has gone on to play nearly 600 games in the National Hockey League.

This trio of players serves as the example of the elite players who the Otters are known to develop and what fans can expect from the next wave of talent making its way to the Flagship City.

General Manager Dave Brown spoke about the importance of this pick and what it means for the Otters organization, building something special around truly elite talent, with the blueprint in place.

“The draft period is an exciting phase during which we see new players such as Jake Murray, Tyler Cooper, Lydon Cabral and AJ Gladman become part of our lineup and shape what lies ahead,” Brown said. “The draft acts as the cornerstone for constructing the future. The visitors would get on the board just 25 seconds into the game following an other-worldly deflection from Maleek McGowan. The Otters would answer swiftly with Ulysses Lombardi striking to make it a 1-1 game. Erie would add a short-handed goal just moments later with Julius Saari scoring to give the Otters a 2-1 lead they would take into the second period. The Fronts would grow into the game, dominating the second and tying the game at 2-2 heading to the third. In the final frame, Kingston would take the lead before a late power play goal from Tyler Cooper would send the game to overtime. In the extra period, Kieren Dervin would be the hero and the Frontenacs would take the extra point.

Saturday would see the Niagara IceDogs make their final visit of the season to Erie as the teams would take to green ice to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day weekend. The visitors would score the game’s first goal before Evan Headrick would get the Otters back to even at 1-1. Niagara would add another to make it a 2-1 game heading into the second period. From here, the IceDogs would take over, scoring five more times and routing the Otters on home ice by a final of 7-1.

FOUR GAMES, ONE WEEK

Erie kicks off their final week of the season by heading to Windsor for a St. Patty’s Day tilt with the Spitfires.

It’s then off to Sarnia for a mid-week clash with the Sting on Wednesday from Progressive Auto Sales Arena.

Erie then heads home for their final game of the season at Erie Insurance Arena as they take on the Guelph Storm.

The Otters will end their regular season with a Sunday afternoon visit to the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines to battle the IceDogs in game 68/68.

WHO TO WATCH

It has been a bit of a roller coaster for Otters forward Evan Headrick since being acquired from the Kitchener Rangers but he’s hoping his eighth goal of the season Saturday will spark a big end of the season. Headrick is in just his second OHL season but with injuries in his rookie year, this has been his first true year in major junior hockey. Headrick still has a big future ahead of him in navy and gold and he’s hoping he’s able to finish strong and come back stronger when the team gets ready for camp in August.

It has been an outstanding year for Otters defenseman Julius Saari and he’s heated up offensively lately as he looks to end his season on a high-note. Saari has two goals in his last three games and points in three of his last four. The Finnish blueliner has been a steady presence all season for the Otters, even in a season that has had its ups and downs. The Otters are looking forward to having number 6 back in their lineup next season and he’s looking to end the year the right way.

KNOW THE FOE

The Windsor Spitfires are first-up for the Otters on the week and this is a team the Otters have had their troubles with this season. The Spits are one of a few teams that are truly all-in, bringing in big names at the trade deadline like Jakub Fibigr, Alex Pharand and Nathan Villeneuve. Lately however, the Spits have been dealing with injuries to key players like Ethan Belchetz and Villeneuve. In their absence , it’s been players like Caden Harvey, Beksultan Makysh and John McLaughlin carrying the offensive load. Not to mention, the outstanding goaltending they’ve gotten this season from Joey Costanzo, Windsor is sure to be a tough nut to crack for the Otters.

Erie heads to Sarnia to take on the Sting next, a team the Otters have had some success against, especially at home. Sarnia, like Erie, is also out of the playoff picture as they look forward to next season and adding a top-four pick. The Sting have gotten nice years out of guys like Beckham Edwards and Alessandro Di Iorio as expected but perhaps a bit more out of left field has been the season that Easton Walos has had, leading the Sting in scoring. Sarnia is a team that can play a physical style and should be an interesting test as the Otters look to exact a bit of revenge for a 9-1 beating they took the last time they crossed the Blue Water Bridge just after the trade deadline.

The Guelph Storm are next up for the Otters as they close out the home schedule with a visit from the 2027 Memorial Cup hosts. The Storm are set to make their return to the postseason and hoping to build momentum to gain experience for a rather young team looking to make their mark. Tyler Hopkins has been an excellent add for the Storm with players like veteran forward Ethan Midema also having a strong season. In net, Zachary Jovanovski has been strong and busy, playing in 50 games for Guelph entering the weekend. The Storm have high-hopes next season but look to shock the world making their way to the postseason, the Otters stand in their way for what is Guelph’s final regular season game.

The Otters will end their season with a team they know quite well in the Niagara IceDogs as they pay a visit to the Meridian Centre. These two just met last Saturday at the EIA with the IceDogs victorious by a 7-1 score. The IceDogs are still missing forward Ryan Roobroeck, however, Riley Patterson continues to lead the way with a terrific season up-front. The IceDogs look to use this final test to their advantage as they prepare for the postseason and a match-up with either Barrie or Ottawa.

HOW TO WATCH, LISTEN, & FOLLOW ALONG

The new home of Otters hockey is Flo Hockey!

Delivering a high-quality viewing experience, Flo Hockey provides access to more than 700 OHL games, and games from the QMJHL, AHL, ECHL, and more, streamed across a range of platforms, including PC and Tablet on Safari and Google Chrome web browsers, as well as iOS and Android mobile devices.

Fans can also see the NHL’s stars of tomorrow on the Amazon Fire, Apple TV, V and Roku platforms – right from the comfort of their homes!

For more information, head to flohockey.tv!

:

PC and/or Tablet on Safari and Google Chrome web browsers

iOS / Android mobile devices.

Amazon Fire

Apple TV

Roku platforms

Flo Hockey provides live game action all season long, plus free-to-access video-on-demand content and a user-friendly interface that is easy to navigate. The home side would dominate proceedings in the early part of the contest, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before the halfway mark of the game. Erie would get themselves a goal back as Tyler Cooper found the back of the net but from there the Knights would take over again, scoring another four-unanswered before an Evan Headrick tally would give the Otters a small consolation as they would go onto fall 10-2 at the hands of their biggest rivals.

Saturday would see the Knights return the favor and head to Erie to conclude the home-and-home, plus the season series. London would strike first near the conclusion of the first period to take a 1-0 lead before Erie’s Kase Kamzik would strike to tie the game heading into the first intermission. The game would play out in a very defensive fashion with the Knights scoring right near the end of the second period to give them the lead heading into the third. Erie was not able to generate much offense from there and after adding an empty-netter, the Knights would go onto win by a final of 3-1.

The season’s final three-in-three would end with the Saginaw Spirit making their last visit to town of the year. The visitors would jump out to a 1-0 lead before the Otters would counter with four un-answered goals coming from Jake Murray twice, Kayden Edwards and Julius Saari to take a 4-1 lead through the midway point. The Spirit would find their groove offensively as they would strike with two goals to trim the deficit to one at 4-3. Just moments later, Cayden Smith would score his first OHL goal to restore a two-goal lead heading into the third period. The final frame was all Spirit as they would score four-goals in a comeback 7-5 win over the Otters.

TWO IN-A-ROW AT HOME

Erie kicks off their weekend with a Friday night tilt with the Kingston Frontenacs making their one and only trip to town.

The Otters will end their weekend with a Saturday night battle with the Niagara IceDogs, Erie’s geographic rivals making their third and final trip to the Flagship City.

WHO TO WATCH

After a lengthy quiet streak, first-year forward Jake Murray broke out in a big way Sunday and is hoping to end his opening year in the OHL on a high-note. Murray came into Sunday’s game with just three points since November 26. He was able to break out of the slump with a two-goal performance in the Otters’ 7-5 defeat to the Saginaw Spirit. With just six games left in the season, Murray is looking to end his campaign strongly as he hopes to build for a massive sophomore campaign in the OHL.

With the Erie Otters now officially out of the postseason picture, Cayden Smith is a youthful name to watch. Smith has been thrust into the Otters’ lineup of late thanks to injuries and his staying power should be there for all to see. Smith is coming off of his first OHL goal in the Otters’ defeat to Saginaw on Sunday. Looking to be the first of many for Smith, the Newmarket, ON native is looking to make a name for himself as he plays for a job next season and the Otters look to see what they have in this former Aurora Tiger Alternate Captain who had 52 points in 49 OJHL games this season.

KNOW THE FOE

The Kingston Frontenacs are about as unfamiliar as it gets for the Erie Otters, a team they only see twice a season, and the first meeting coming back on October 5, a 1-0 win for the Fronts. Kingston is led offensively by forward Alex McLean, who was acquired at the trade deadline from the Guelph Storm. Former Otter Alex Misiak has also been solid in Kingston where he has linked up with fellow Slovakian Tomas Pobezal. The Fronts have also seen terrific goaltending from Matthew Minchak and Gavin Betts, both of whom have save percentages over .900 heading into the weekend.

Contrary to Kingston, the Otters know the Niagara IceDogs quite well as they play game two of their three second-half meetings. Last time at the Meridian Centre on February 26, in a very exciting game, the Otters would score with just about five seconds left to send the game to overtime then a shootout. The IceDogs are still missing forward Ryan Roobroeck, however, Riley Patterson continues to lead the way with a terrific season up-front. The IceDogs look to use these final games as a tune-up as they look forward to a more-than-likely first round playoff series with the Ottawa 67’s.

Hayden Reid would find the back of the net for Niagara starting the second making it a 3-1 contest. The Otters would answer with two of their own in fairly quick succession with Michael Dec and Kayden Edwards finding the back of the net. In the third, the IceDogs thought they won it with Noah Read’s late goal to make it 4-3. The game would require a shootout and Riley Patterson would score on his first attempt, plus three-straight saves from Charlie Robertson would give Niagara the 5-4 victory.

Saturday would see the Otters welcome the Owen Sound Attack to kick off the annual back-to-back weekend at the EIA. The Attack would jump out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first. Just 21 seconds after the Attack scored their second, Michael D’Alessio found the back of the net to get the Otters on the board. A short-handed goal from Noah Nelson would make it 3-1 Attack before Andrew Kuzma would make it a 3-2 Attack lead heading into the second period. The second would begin with Lenny Greenberg scoring to make it 4-2 Attack. Erie would respond with two goals of their own from Ulysses Lombardi and Cal Hughes to tie the game at 4-4. For the second-straight game the Otters would head to OT and then a shootout. It would take until the eighth round for either team to find the back of the net as Jake Crawford would score the winner for the Attack as they would take the extra point 5-4.

Erie would play their first of two Sunday home games as they would wrap their season series with the Attack. The visitors would jump out to a 2-0 lead before the Otters would score a power play goal with Michael Dec doing the honors to make it a 2-1 game. Kamzik is a big kid but had not shown this physical side of his game. Now that he has a scrap under his belt, Kamzik is hoping to have this confidence translate to the score board as he looks to have a strong ending to his first season in the OHL and look forward to being a big part of Erie’s future.

Skill is certainly not an issue for Otters forward Andrew Kuzma and he has adapted well to wearing an Otters uniform. Kuzma is coming off of a week where he scored two huge goals for the Otters, including a late game-tying goal in Niagara as the Otters took the IceDogs to a shootout. Now with six goals in an Otters uniform since being picked-up, Kuzma is looking to close out this chapter of his hockey career strong as embarks on the next part of his hockey journey.

KNOW THE FOE

It has not been quite the dominant season that London Knights fans have been used to over the last few years but they have still been a tough test for any opponent. Offensively the Knights have been led by Ryan Brown, whom they acquired around the trade deadline from the Sarnia Sting. Lately, they have not played many close games, with a handful of defeats where they have been shut-down or a few explosive victories. London is always a tough opponent and the Otters look for their first win since September against their rivals as they embark on a home-and-home to close out the season series.

The Saginaw Spirit are up next for Erie as they are the team’s final opponent on the weekend, making their final visit to town on Sunday. The Spirit have seen plenty of offensive production from the trio of Egor Barabanov, Dima Zhilkin and Nikita Klepov yet have still had some of the same troubles keeping the puck out of the net. Erie would get on the board first in the hockey game with Cal Hughes scoring in his first game back since January 24. The Generals would answer with a goal of their own to tie the game before the Otters would come back with Michael D’Alessio‘s first OHL goal giving Erie back the lead. The visitors would get one back under a minute later to tie the game back at 2-2. Erie would earn the game’s next goal with Kayden Edwards scoring in his third-straight home game to make it 3-2 after one. The second would be much quieter with Oshawa scoring a late equalizer to make it a 3-3 game going into the third period. The third would be scoreless and in OT an early winner from the Generals would give them the 4-3 win.

Saturday would see the Otters welcome the Kitchener Rangers to town for the final time this season. A power play goal would see the visitors jump out to a 1-0 lead which they would take into the first intermission. Kitchener would find the back of the net two more times in the middle frame, both on the man-advantage giving them a 3-0 lead heading into the third period. In the final frame, the Otters would get one back as Jackson Schouten was able to find the back of the net but it would not be enough for Erie as they would fall by a final of 3-1.

SHORT TRIP, TWO AT HOME

Erie kicks off their three-game weekend with a Thursday night tilt with the Niagara IceDogs in St. Catharines, the first meeting between the two geographic rivals since November 8, 2025.

The weekend concludes with the annual two-game visit from the Owen Sound Attack with a Saturday night tilt and a Sunday afternoon clash wrapping-up the six-game season series for two Midwest Division rivals.

WHO TO WATCH

Luc Plante has become a very interesting part of this Otters club over the course of this season as he has gotten more comfortable with the OHL. Lately, the Chesterfield, MI native has been playing a more physical game, dropping the gloves three times in the last week. The points have also been coming at a much quicker pace for the Northern Michigan commit as Plante has a point in two of his last three games. Look for number 61 to finish the season strong and have a huge weekend.

Ulysses Lombardi has been a player of interest for the Otters since they picked him up in December and now he has the goals to back it up. Off the back of his first goal in the OHL earlier this month, the Aurora, ON native has been playing at a high level, quickly becoming one of Erie’s most analytically strong players and getting top minutes. Heading into this weekend’s games, Lombardi is riding a modest three-game point streak that he looks to continue as he hopes to finish his first season in the OHL as strong as possible.

KNOW THE FOE

The Niagara IceDogs have had an up-and-down season that has seen them enjoy some great highs, but also some tough lows. Playing just under .500 over their last 10, the IceDogs have struggled to keep the puck out of their net, losing three of their last four, getting out-scored 22-4 in that stretch. Up-front Riley Patterson has had a terrific season, picking up over a point-per-game for the team from the Niagara Region. This IceDogs team should be a lock for the postseason but how far they go could be another question. These two clubs will faceoff quite a bit with Thursday’s game marking the fourth of their six meetings on the season.

The Owen Sound Attack have hit a major free-fall and Erie has played a small part in it. Since Erie and Owen Sound last met on February 11, they have lost all but one game heading into their week that begins with the Oshawa Generals at the Bayshore Wednesday. This team has gone a long way in the wrong direction following a white-hot start to the season. Offensively, the Attack can still score with players like Tristan Delisle and Pierce Mbuyi having strong seasons. The latter has collected seven points (3G+4A) in the four games played between the Otters and Attack. A big divisional game with two teams battling for their place in the Western Conference playoffs.

The Attack would find the score board first in the contest but it would be Erie who would explode offensively following this early goal. Ulysses Lombardi would score his first OHL goal before Kayden Edwards would score twice in-a-row, the first multi-goal game of his OHL career, to give Erie the advantage. Following a tally from Luc Plante, the Attack would get one back to start the second and make it a 4-2 game. Erie would respond with two quick tallies right after as Andrew Kuzma and Michael Dec, scoring against his former team, would strike to make it a 6-2 game. The visitors would pull one back right before the second intermission but in the third, Kuzma would score his second and Jackson Schouten would add one more as the Otters would defeat the Attack 8-3, scoring their most goals this season and winning by their largest margin.

The Otters would continue their weekend Friday as they would travel to Brantford for the final time to battle the Bulldogs. Erie would get on the board first in the game as Evan Headrick would strike to make it a 1-0 game. The Otters would carry this lead with them into the second period but the Bulldogs would strike early to tie the game. Another four goals from there would see one of the top teams in the OHL take over and down the Otters by a score of 5-1.

Saturday would see the Otters welcome the Flint Firebirds to town for the second and final time this year. The Firebirds would get themselves on the board early but the Otters would respond. Kayden Edwards would get Erie’s offense going on the night before Michael Dec would strike off the rush to give the Otters a 2-1 lead that Erie would take with them into the second period. In the middle frame, Flint would strike with two goals right away to make it a 3-2 game. The Otters would respond with two of their own as Dec would score his second and Evan Headrick would strike to give Erie a 4-3 lead heading into the third period. In the final frame, Flint would tie the contest at 4-4 with an early goal. Edwards would come to the rescue for the navy and gold as he would find the back of the net with his second of the night and give Erie a late lead. Another goal from Headrick, clinching his first career multi-goal game, plus late-game heroics from goaltender Charlie Burns would see the Otters skate past the Firebirds to the tune of a remarkable 6-4 win.

The weekend would conclude for Erie at the Sleeman Centre in Guelph for the final road game of the season between the Otters and Storm. Ulysses Lombardi’s second career OHL goal would give the Otters the start they were looking for and a 1-0 lead heading into the second period. From here, the Storm would come alive offensively, scoring five-unanswered on their way to a 5-1 victory as Erie would take four of eight possible points on the weekend.

GOOD TO BE HOME

Erie kicks off their weekend with a Friday night tilt with the Oshawa Generals looking to earn a split in the season series.

The weekend concludes Saturday as the Kitchener Rangers make their third and final trip to town for a Saturday night battle.

WHO TO WATCH

Since combining him with Ritter Coombs and Jackson Schouten, Kayden Edwards has unlocked something in his game and has been a true force for the Otters. Last weekend Edwards had back-to-back two-goal games in the two home games that Erie played. Knowing the team will be on home ice this weekend should be a good sign for the Scarborough, ON native as he looks to keep his hot stretch rolling. A player that will be in an Erie uniform for a long time to come, Edwards will hope to finish the season strong, building confidence ahead of his third season in the league.

Ulysses Lombardi has been a player of interest for the Otters since they picked him up in December and now he has the goals to back it up. Scoring his first goal last Wednesday at home against Owen Sound and his second goal Monday in Guelph, Lombardi will hope to keep his scoring ways rolling for Erie. These goals should give the Aurora, ON native a confidence boost heading toward the season’s finish line as he knows his services will be counted on in the Flagship City for seasons to come.

KNOW THE FOE

The Oshawa Generals have had a rough ride after they made the OHL Final in back-to-back season. Gone are the days of Beckett Sennecke and Calum Ritchie, but in are the days of a young team looking to get back to that level. Up-front, Owen Griffin, a player who was a part of last season’s team, leads the way. In net, Matthew Humphries has been terrific since being picked-up from the Niagara IceDogs. This Generals team has an eye toward a very exciting future after championship glory was just out of reach over the last few years.

One of the OHL’s best outfits in the Kitchener Rangers comes to town to conclude the weekend Saturday. Though the Otters have only defeated the Rangers once this season, they have been in every game this season between these two Midwest Division rivals, including their last contest that went to overtime. Dylan Edwards has been terrific for the Rangers but has had an up-and-down time against his old team. Jack Pridham has been unstoppable for the Rangers against the Otters as he has at least a goal in every game he’s played between the two teams, totaling seven goals in the four games he’s played. The Rangers are looking to make a deep run this season and are chasing the number one seed in the West.
