LAST TIME OUT
The Otters went to work last week with a set of three games in three separate locations to end their long road trip before heading home this weekend. They kicked things off with a mid-week game in Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday, facing off against the Greyhounds. The Otters put up a dominant performance, besting the Greyhounds 5-2. Though the Soo struck first in the opening period, it was Brett Hammond to answer, scoring his fourth goal in his fourth-straight game to even the game going into the second. After a slow second period, still tied, it was a whirlwind of goals for Erie. Dylan Edwards buried one to give the Otter their first lead of the night two minutes into the third period. We then saw a series of goals as Hammond netted his second of the evening, Mclean Agrette got his fourth of the season and Erie’s fourth of the night, and Wesley Royston closed things off on a positive note, scoring his first of the season on the Greyhounds open net. The final score of the matchup was 5-2, Erie heading down to Michigan on a high-note.
The two-part series in the Great Lakes State would prove to be a challenge for the Otters. In the first of the set, a battle against Saginaw, play was back and forth, both teams peppering the opposing goaltenders with shots and going into the final period of the game at 2-2, Gabriel Frasca and Wesley Royston keeping Erie in the game, answering every Spirit attack. Despite their efforts, the otters were not able to come back when the Spirit went on a three goal run to end the match 5-2, Erie falling, yet hoping to come back better in their next match.
Flint also proved to be a tough opponent for Erie. Charlie Burns’ defensive efforts from net were notable, as Flint was rocketing off shots on the goaltender, having 16 in just the first period though the score remained 0-0 after the first 20. Flint would go on to start the remainder of the game on the front foot, netting five-straight in the middle period, where the scoring would stop for both teams for the remainder of the game. The Firebirds ended the night with a win on their home-ice 5-0.
WHO TO WATCH
Brett Hammond continues his hot-streak. The third year vet out of Canada’s capital leads the team in goals for the season, coming up in big moments for the Otters and contributing massively to Erie’s wins this season. If Hammond continues on this route he will continue to be a key contributor in Otter’s wins going forward.
On the opposite end of the ice, Charlie Burns has been making a name for himself. Burns recorded 28 in the Otters win over the Soo Greyhounds this past weekend, and would go on to tally 17 more against Flint a few days later. As the last line of defense for Erie, Burns has been reliable in net and a big part of keeping the Otters competitive in tough games.
KNOW THE FOE
The Guelph Storm are 6-5-2-0 for the season, their first win of the season being against the Otters who will hope to take home the win in this rematch on their home ice. The most notable scorers for the Storm include Carter Stevens and Jaako Wycisk who both have tallied seven for the year. Stevens also leads the team for assists with seven, a playmaker for Guelph and a name to watch this Thursday. Philadelphia Flyers prospect Jett Luchanko will make his season debut for the Storm after playing in four National Hockey League games.
The Otters then head to Colt country, getting back on the road to take on Barrie. The Colts have had a slower season, with four wins and seven losses thus far. Their last matchup against Kitchener broke the Colts six-game losing streak, giving the team a taste of success and an urge to continue this during the upcoming weekend.
The Otters last opponent of the week, at Owen Sound will be a good fight for the teams, as the Attack are proving themselves in the Western conference this season with nine wins and five losses. This conference foe for the Otters will be hungry for a win at home after suffering three straight losses most recently. The Attacks leading scorer, Nicolas Sykora will be a name on the Otters scouting report, Otters defensemen looking to eliminate Sykora’s time on the puck this Sunday.
