[{"id":81902,"date":"2026-04-29T16:30:55","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T20:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chl.ca\/ohl-icedogs\/?p=81902"},"modified":"2026-04-29T16:30:55","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T20:30:55","slug":"icedogs-proud-to-support-smile-cookie-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chl.ca\/ohl-icedogs\/article\/icedogs-proud-to-support-smile-cookie-week","title":{"rendered":"ICEDOGS PROUD TO SUPPORT SMILE COOKIE WEEK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By Cameron Kelcey<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NIAGARA, ON &#8211; Niagara IceDogs mascot, Bones, spent some time decorating Smile Cookies at a local Tim Hortons in St. Catharines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tim Horton&#8217;s Franchisee, Jennifer and her husband, Dan, were proud to support Birchway Niagara and Hospice Niagara with proceeds from Smile Cookies sold at their Welland Ave location.<\/p>\n<p>Birchway Niagara is dedicated to protecting and empowering survivors of abuse, while Hospice Niagara serves to help individuals and families live well from diagnosis to bereavement.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Smile Cookie campaign first emerged in 1996 and was created by Maureen Sauve, a Tim Hortons restaurant owner in Hamilton, ON. He joins IceDogs alumni and former teammate, Andrew Wycisk, who also just committed to UofG.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Doherty has spent the past two seasons with the IceDogs. He recorded 13 points in 29 regular-season games with Niagara.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wang was selected 33rd overall by the San Jose Sharks in the second round of the 2025 NHL Draft. He has committed to play at Boston University for the 2026-2027 season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Division 1B tournament is being held in Shenzhen, China and includes six countries: Estonia, Romania, South Korea, China, the Netherlands and Spain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wang scored a goal in China\u2019s opening game against South Korea; however, the team ultimately lost 7-4. This past season, after playing only two games with the IceDogs, Wycisk parted ways with the club to play for the Trenton Golden Hawks in the OJHL. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wycisk thrived during his time with the Golden Hawks, recording 27 points in 27 regular-season games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wycisk\u2019s contributions helped the Golden Hawks qualify for the OJHL playoffs. The club swept the Lindsay Muskies in the first round, but fell to the Newmarket Hurricanes in the second round in a 4-2 series. Cooksey contributed a goal and an assist in the Buckland Cup-winning game.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It feels unbelievable, winning the league in your last year of junior,&#8221; says Cooksey.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s something a lot of guys wish they could do. To have actually done it is surreal&#8230; hopefully we can carry that to the Centennial Cup.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cooksey was signed to the IceDogs as a free agent at the beginning of the 2025-2026 season. After 20 regular-season games with the IceDogs, he opted to leave and join the Patriots, where his play flourished. He tallied 15 goals and a total of 22 points in 17 regular-season games with the Patriots and followed that up with 15 goals and 27 points in 20 playoff games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cooksey had spent the previous two seasons in the British Columbia Hockey League with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks and, before that, spent time in the OHJL with the Markham Royals. He is a promising young defenseman\u2014a right-shot, no less\u2014who will bring fresh energy to the team,&#8221; says HC \u015akoda Plze\u00f1 General Manager Martin Straka.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The twenty-year-old from Ilava, Slovakia, made his OHL debut in 2022 after being selected in the First Round, eighth overall by the Sudbury Wolves in the 2022 Import Draft.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since then, Chromiak has appeared in 237 regular-season OHL games for the Sudbury Wolves, Kingston Frontenacs, Kitchener Rangers, and the Niagara IceDogs, amassing 25 goals and 92 assists for 117 points.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Acquired at the deadline in a trade with the Kitchener Rangers, Chromiak put up an impressive six goals and 17 assists for 23 points in just 29 games played for the IceDogs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chromiak\u2019s mobility, offensive prowess, and puck-moving ability earned him the opportunity to represent Slovakia at multiple World Championships, as well as two U18 tournaments and the 2024 World Junior Championship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We wish Jakub all the best from Dog Country, and best of luck on the next chapter of his career.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once and IceDog, always an IceDog.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PLZEN, Czech Republic \u2013 Veteran Defenceman, Jakub Chromiak signed his first professional contract with HC \u015akoda Plze\u00f1. &#8220;We have been following Jakub for a long time. Of his 30 goals, Roobroeck leads the way with ten power-play goals.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The IceDogs selected Roobroeck second overall in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection, and he is poised for success at the next level. The 6\u20194\u201d Forward from London, Ont, has made a name for himself as a highly skilled 2026 NHL Draft prospect known as a &#8220;natural goal scorer&#8221; with an elite, heavy shot and power. Roobroeck projects as a top-line power forward with excellent offensive vision and a refined, high-volume shooting ability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NHL Central Scouting also recognized IceDogs rookie goaltender, Vladislav Yermolenko.
