Team White Storms Back to Kick Off Day 2 on Training Camp
NIAGARA ON, – Day 2 kicked off early, as the teams took to the ice for game number 2 so far between Team Black and Team White.
A slight change in the format; his morning’s game consisted of 3 periods (15 min, 15 min, 20 min).
A relatively quiet first period started off when Ivan Galiyanov (25) set up Reece Matier (15) of Team White to open the scoring and secure the lead near the end of the first. Ryan Roobroeck (20) of Team Black answered quickly, putting one on the board with an assist from Niagara’s 1st round pick of the OHL Priority Selection, Braidy Wassilyn (12) to tie it at one and cap off the first frame.
A stark contrast to period number one, the scorers table was busy in the second as Team Black exploded for 4 unanswered goals. Nicholas Muzzatti (15), Andrew Vermuelen (22), Mathieu Paris (21), his second of camp so far), and Jason Zhou (24) all chipped in for one each, and Team Black took a commanding 5-1 lead into the third period.
Team White, with their backs against the wall, came out exactly how they needed to in the third. Mike Levin (22) scored his second goal of training camp with an assist from Callum Cheynowski (9) to breathe some life into Team White. A penalty from Zhou set up Team White for a power play, but they were unable to capitalize with the man advantage.
Team Black answered back, as Roobroeck secured his 4th point of Training Camp, assisting newly acquired Defenseman Matthew Virgilio (10) who gave team Black a 6-2 lead.
Team White was not going down without a fight however; they came back firing with Galiyanov, Levin, Daniil Grishachev (26) and Maximus Crete (13) all scoring to tie the game up at 6. Crete’s goal came with the goalie pulled and sent the game to overtime.
The momentum carried over into the extra frame: 27 seconds in, Crete and Ethan Czata (1) sprung away on a 2-on-1 and the 2024 draftee and the recent Hlinka Gold Medal winner made no mistake: a beautiful cross ice feed iced the game and gave Team White the thrilling 7-6 comeback victory.
