Niagara IceDogs Captain Gavin Bryant Launches ‘Gav’s Corner’
NIAGARA, ON – Gavin Bryant, captain of the Niagara IceDogs, proudly announces the launch of ‘Gav’s Corner,’ a new initiative aimed at uniting and supporting individuals impacted by Type 1 Diabetes.
Inspired by his sister’s diagnosis in 2021 and witnessing his former teammate and roommate Mark Wooley, who is also a Type 1 Diabetic, create Wooley’s Warriors, Bryant felt compelled to find his own way to contribute to the cause. Although not diagnosed himself, Bryant has seen first hand what it is like to have people close to him go through the challenges this condition poses, and is dedicated to creating a community within the hockey community where those affected can find solidarity, encouragement, and a shared sense of purpose.
Wooley was very proud to learn of Bryant’s campaign, as it of course hit close to home for him.
“I was lucky enough to have Gavin move in with me his rookie season as I finished out my junior career in Owen Sound. [Bryant’s] maturity level and passion for the game stood out right away and it is amazing to now see him as Captain of an OHL team,” said Wooley. “He helped me a lot throughout my journey with ‘Woolleys Warriors’ in Owen Sound and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to play with him. It is truly special to see Gavin continuing his efforts within the diabetic community and utilizing his platform in the OHL. I am looking forward to following along with his initiative this season and can’t wait to see the amazing impact he will have in the community”.
Gav’s Corner was created with the dual mission of offering support and fostering valuable conversations within the Type 1 Diabetes community. The initiative seeks to bring together people who understand the unique challenges of living with Type 1 Diabetes, while also advancing the search for a cure.
Each home game, 4 tickets will be donated to a family impacted by Type 1 Diabetes, they will also receive a Video Board shout-out as well as a post game meet and greet where they can meet Gavin and share their story.
“The Gav’s Corner Initiative is an idea to bring those affected together,” said Bryant. “My past experience of Diabetes doesn’t hit, physically to myself, but those around me.” Gav’s Corner is about increasing awareness around Diabetes and the work that DiabetesCanada does to help those impacted.
Bryant’s leadership extends beyond the rink. As a respected figure both on and off the ice, his commitment to making a difference is a testament to his character and dedication.
When asked about her brother’s initiative, Bryant’s sister Sadie was thrilled about the idea.
“Gavin has been a huge role model for me in both sports and life in general. For him to take on something so important and personal to me means a lot. He can’t relate to what goes on in the life of a diabetic but he sees it through me and the way he’s dealt with it, supported me and is continuing to do so is very inspiring for both myself and the diabetes community. I only see his campaign going up from here on out and I can’t wait to see what the future holds” said Sadie.
“It has been my goal to recognize and learn about those affected and ultimately help in the fight for a cure. This is my way of bringing those affected together for a night of hockey and ultimately just a person to talk to that wants to help” said Bryant.
The launch of Gav’s Corner represents a significant step forward in both community support and advocacy for Type 1 Diabetes. It provides a place for individuals to share their stories, find connection, and join in the collective effort to improve the lives of those affected by this chronic condition.
