OHL Power Rankings: Feb. 26, 2024
With Family Day results factored into last week’s edition of the Power Rankings, there was a little bit less to report this time around, with movement coming in the bottom half of the list in Week 21.
Who’s up:
Ottawa 67’s – up one spot to #8 this week
The Barber Poles come off a shootout loss to the London Knights on Saturday, but defeated the Oshawa Generals 5-0 on Friday to climb ahead of them on this week’s instalment. Collin MacKenzie returned to the crease for the first time in a month, stopping all 33 shots he faced as Ottawa came out of the weekend two points back of the fourth-place Generals for home ice advantage in Round 1 of the OHL Playoffs. Ottawa is currently one point from clinching a spot after Oshawa, Mississauga and North Bay all did so over the weekend.
Owen Sound Attack – up two spots to #11 this week
There’s been some tough sledding for Owen Sound over the past couple months, but there’s good news for the Bears in the final Power Rankings of the month of February as they rise two spots. The Attack earned a point in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Barrie Colts on Wednesday. They came back strong at home on Saturday, defeating the Windsor Spitfires 6-3 as Ethan Burroughs and Landen Hookey both scored twice. There’s a big showdown with the Guelph Storm at the Sleeman Centre on Friday before the Bears are home for three straight.
Kingston Frontenacs – up two spots to #13 this week
The Frontenacs won two of three last week, losing to the London Knights at home on Friday before skating to back-to-back wins in Niagara and Erie, outscoring their opponents 14-5. NHL Draft prospect Gabriel Frasca scored a natural hat-trick in Saturday’s 8-1 win over the Niagara IceDogs before Linus Hemstrom followed-up with a trio of his own on Sunday in Erie. The Frontenacs hold down seventh place in the Eastern Conference.
Barrie Colts – up one spot to #15 this week
The Colts won two of three, besting Owen Sound and Mississauga before losing in Oshawa on Sunday night. Draft eligible forward Riley Patterson keeps scoring, leading OHL rookies with 24 goals on the season. Captain Beau Jelsma is riding a 10-game point streak, one that has yielded 10 goals and seven assists.
Who’s down:
Oshawa Generals – down one spot to #9 this week
The Generals split their weekend, with a 5-0 loss in Ottawa on Friday ultimately pushing them down one spot on the rankings below the 67’s, who they lead by two points in the Eastern Conference. The Generals clinched a playoff spot with their Sunday night win over Barrie.
Erie Otters – down one spot to #12 this week
The Otters defeated the Guelph Storm 3-2 on Saturday before dropping a 6-4 decision to the Kingston Frontenacs on Sunday. Erie has lost eight of their last 10 and look for improved fortunes on the road with stops in Peterborough, Kingston and Ottawa this week.
Guelph Storm – down two spots to #14 this week
Guelph’s trying to ride out the Storm right now. The crimson kids have lost 12 of 13, surrendering a lead against Windsor at home on Friday before losing 3-2 in Erie on Saturday night.
Flint Firebirds – down two spots to #16 this week
After scoring three wins two weeks ago, the Firebirds promptly went 0-3 this past weekend to fall back down to 16th on the list. The Firebirds will play eight of their remaining 12 games at the Dort Financial Center.
