Gibson goes to the ‘Motor City’ in 2nd Round of 2023 NHL Draft
With a selection in the 2nd Round (42nd overall) of the 2023 Draft, the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings came calling for Soo Greyhounds blueliner Andrew Gibson.
He was the 6th OHLer selected, and first in the second round, of this year’s draft.
The La Salle, ON native finished the 2022-23 campaign with 7 goals and 14 assists (21 points) in 45 regular season games played. That was good enough for the highest scoring rookie on the team (and rookie of the year award), and 2nd highest defenceman.
Earlier this spring Andrew was a member of the bronze-medal winning Team Canada at the 2023 IIHF U18 World Championship.
After completing his 1st-season in the OHL with the Hounds, the 6.03, 198-lb Gibson was rated the 31st North American Skater in the NHL Central Scouting’s Final Rankings.
He would have been a participant at the 2023 Kubota CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game if not for an injury that sidelined him for 23 games.
With Gibson’s selection, a defenceman from the Greyhounds has been selected to the NHL in seven consecutive drafts.
Overall, the Hounds have seen players of the program selected in 17th consecutive drafts.
Andrew also becomes the first Greyhounds selected to the Red Wings organization since Ryan Sproul was selected in the 2nd Round of the 2011 NHL Draft.
