POSITION SUMMARY: The Soo Greyhounds Hockey Club of the Ontario Hockey League is seeking a skilled and dedicated Athletic Therapist to oversee the health, safety, and physical well-being of its players. This individual will be responsible for the overall health and welfare of players, with a particular emphasis on first-aid, injury prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation. The position requires the provision of emergency, on-ice, and clinical care of musculoskeletal injuries and a thorough knowledge of therapeutic techniques.
The Athletic Therapist will work closely with the coaching staff, medical professionals, and players to support optimal athletic performance and recovery throughout the season.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide immediate care and injury management during practices, games, and team events (home and away).
• Conduct physical examinations and assess injuries.
• Recognize, manage, and rehabilitate musculoskeletal injuries.
• Initiate, design, and implement specialized therapy and rehabilitation programs.
• Use physical therapy techniques and therapeutic modalities to recondition injuries.
• Refer players to specialized medical personnel when necessary.
• Consult regularly with physicians and allied health professionals on treatment plans and progress.
• Deliver emergency first-aid and basic life support, if required.
• Maintain accurate, confidential player medical records (electronic and hard copy).
• Prepare medical documentation and communicate medical status to team stakeholders.
• Advise players on exercise and rehab programs tailored to individual needs.
• Fit and advise on standard and custom sport injury braces and equipment.
• Provide guidance on injury prevention, taping, and strapping techniques.
• Coordinate and communicate with general manager, coaches, strength coach, and administrative staff.
• Liaise with visiting teams regarding emergency protocols and medical support services.
• Monitor medical inventory and order supplies as needed.
• Stay current with the latest advancements in sports medicine and therapeutic practices.
• Oversee insurance claim documentation and reporting.
• Educate players through presentations and seminars on wellness and injury prevention.
• Respond to inquiries from players, families, management, and coaching staff.
• Train and supervise temporary staff, students, and volunteers.
• Recommend and implement advances in sport science to support player performance, injury prevention, and overall team success
• Attend and provide coverage at all games, practices, and team events.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Therapy or a related field.
• Certified Athletic Therapist (CAT(C)), in good standing with the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA).
• Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience, preferably in high-performance or elite hockey.
• First Responder and CPR certification.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, team-first environment.
• Flexible work schedule, including evenings, weekends, and travel with the team.
ASSETS:
• Knowledge of OHL Policies and protocols.
• Experience working with elite athletes.
• Additional certifications in manual therapy, taping, or strength and conditioning.
