Generals take rough fall to Firebirds on home ice
Oshawa, Ont., – It was one to forget as the Oshawa Generals fell 7-2 to the Flint Firebirds.
Rasmus Kumpulainen picked up a pair of goals while Matthew Buckley and Ben Danford each had an assist in the loss.
It was Flint breaking the deadlock as Connor Clattenburg came streaking in down the boards snapping a shot on net that Bender would get his blocker on, but the puck went up in the air and made its way into the net for a 1-0 Firebirds lead.
A short while later, that lead would grow as a shot from Simon Slavicek was blocked and it was Nathan Aspinall on the doorstep to put the puck in the net for a 2-0 lead.
Similar to the second goal, Oliver Peer took a shot on net generating a rebound and it was Jimmy Lombardi there to tap it in, making it 3-0 Flint.
The Gens would find an answer as Rasmus Kumpulainen created a turnover taking the puck in all alone and beating Day, cutting the lead to 3-1 Firebirds.
Flint would get that goal right back, and after some zone time, it was Nolan Dann making a nice pass to Slavicek for a one-timer that beat Jacob Oster as the lead grew to 4-1.
In the second period, the Firebirds would add to their total as Peer was sprung in 1-on-1 with Oster making a move to the backhand then sliding it five-hole, increasing the lead to 5-1 Flint.
Peer would strike again carving through the Gens’ defence splitting the pair finding himself in all alone, again making a move to the backhand before flipping it up into the top of the net for a 6-1 Flint lead.
The Firebirds kept the pressure coming on the power play as a Dann shot created a rebound and it was Clattenburg getting his second of the game making it 7-1 Flint.
Oshawa would respond on a power play of their own as it was Matthew Buckley making a nice pass through the seam for Kumpulainen to one time for his second of the game cutting the lead to 7-2.
