Generals first-round blueliner Ben Danford signs with Toronto Maple Leafs
Oshawa, Ont. – Oshawa Generals Ben Danford has committed to a three-year entry-level contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs organization.
Danford signs after being selected in the 1st round, 31st overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft at the Sphere in Las Vegas on June 28.
“I’m excited and honoured to sign with the Leafs,” says Danford. “Huge thanks to my teammates, coaches, my family, trainers and anyone else who has helped me along the way.”
Danford was selected 14th overall at the 2022 OHL Priority Selection by the Generals and in his rookie campaign, Danford recorded 4 goals and 17 assists for a total of 21 points in 63 games played. Danford earned the respect of his teammates, coaches, and all of GensNation as he quickly became a core member on the backend.
Danford has been one of the top defensive defencemen in the Ontario Hockey League this season in just his second year. He has shown to players, fans, scouts, and coaches why he deserves his ice time as he is known for his smart playmaking, vital shot-blocking, and strong gap control. He also uses his size and stability to be aggressive along the boards with hip-checks and one-on-one battles.
“It’s a great accomplishment to be drafted and signed by an original six team,” says Generals GM and Vice President, Roger Hunt. “For a small-town kid, this is a huge achievement and we couldn’t be more proud of Ben.”
The Oshawa Generals organization would like to congratulate Ben on this amazing milestone in his career!
