Kieren Dervin took to his personal Instagram to announce that he has committed to play at the University of Michigan, where he will continue his academic and hockey career beginning with the 2026-27 season.<\/span><\/p>\n

Originally a 5th round pick of the Frontenacs in the 2023 OHL Priority Selection, Dervin signed with the Frontenacs in the middle of the 2024-25 season. <\/span><\/p>\n

Dervin was a 3rd round selection of the Vancouver Canucks in the 2025 NHL Draft before returning to Kingston this past season to feature in a key role, <\/span>developing into a reliable presence up front and an important contributor to the club\u2019s lineup. His progression both on and off the ice has earned him the opportunity to head to the NCAA level.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A total of four Kingston Frontenacs have been named to NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings ahead of the 2026 NHL Draft on June 26-27th in Buffalo, NY.<\/span><\/p>\n

Andre Mondoux (142) and Alex McLean (217) are ranked among North American skaters, while Matt Minchak (15) and Gavin Betts (24) are featured in the North American goaltenders rankings. Ranked 14th among International skaters is 2025 CHL Import Draft selection Adam Goljer, who was also just named captain of Team Slovakia at the 2026 IIHF U18 World Championships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2026 NHL Draft will be held June 26\u201327 at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York, marking the fourth time the Buffalo Sabres have hosted the event. The NHL will once again use a decentralized format, with prospects and their families attending in person while team executives make selections remotely from their home markets. Buffalo has also hosted the NHL\u2019s annual Scouting Combine since 2015 and will welcome the league\u2019s top draft-eligible prospects again this spring.<\/span><\/p>\n

McGowan\u2019s signing is the culmination of a journey defined by hard work and perseverance. Originally selected in the 10th round of the 2021 OHL Priority Selection, McGowan worked his way up through the Frontenacs organization, earning himself Team MVP honours after his overage season with the black and gold. McGowan became an undeniable presence on the ice, earning the attention of professional scouts around the hockey world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over his OHL career, McGowan established himself as a reliable presence on the blue line, showcasing strong defensive instincts, intense physical play, the ability to contribute in all areas of the ice, and continued growth year after year in the OHL.<\/span><\/p>\n

The young goaltender has been a favourite for Hockey Canada, having won a Gold Medal at the 2024 U17 Challenge along with a Bronze Medal at the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.<\/span><\/p>\n

The preliminary camp will bring together the top U18 players from across the country as they compete for a spot on Team Canada\u2019s final roster. The 2026 IIHF U18 World Championship is set to take place in Slovakia later this month.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether it was key defensive shifts, timely offensive contributions, or his presence in high-pressure moments, he proved to be a dependable piece of the lineup. <\/span><\/p>\n

The 2025-26 season came to a close sooner than the Kingston Frontenacs would have liked, but not without promise. A first round sweep at the hands of the Ottawa 67\u2019s tells only part of the story. Beneath the surface, this was a series defined by tight margins, hard lessons, and a young group beginning to understand what it takes to compete when the stakes are at their highest.<\/span><\/p>\n

When the dust settled on the trade deadline and the team had moved on from Jacob Battaglia, Tyler Hopkins and Andrew Kuzma; the general consensus around the league was that Kingston had thrown in the towel and committed to getting a high draft pick this season. The moves saw younger players get elevated into bigger roles and the team consistently got better as the season went on, finishing sixth in the Eastern Conference. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Frontenacs earned their place in the postseason through consistency, good habits and a strong work ethic; finishing much higher than most anticipated. When the playoffs arrived, they were met with a structured and experienced Ottawa squad that executed in key moments. <\/span><\/p>\n

Despite being swept, Kingston was far from overmatched. Each contest was competitive, with the Frontenacs showing resilience, pushing pace, and refusing to back down; fighting back in multiple games to tie the game up and push back against the 67’s. It was a series that demanded near perfect hockey, and that’s something the Frontenacs just were not ready for. Junior hockey is a cyclical sport and this wasn’t Kingston’s time, not yet.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Kingston, the value of this experience cannot be overstated. Playoff hockey introduces a different standard; one where details are magnified, time and space disappear, and every mistake carries weight. That lesson was felt in real time by a core of young players who were thrust into meaningful roles over the course of the season. <\/span><\/p>\n

Alex McLean was acquired in a trade with the Guelph Storm around the trade deadline and ended up leading the team in points. Rookies Aleks Kulemin, Nolan Snyder and Robin Kuzma formed ‘The Kid Line’ and were relied upon heavily down the stretch and rose to the occasion many times. Matthew Henderson showed maturity beyond his years as a first-year defenseman and played big minutes in the playoffs. Gavin Betts won multiple OHL Goaltender of the week honours this season and looks poised to have a breakout season next year, taking that next step. Many players took important steps forward, gaining first hand exposure to the intensity and discipline required to win in the postseason.<\/span><\/p>\n

There were flashes throughout the series that offered a glimpse of what this group can become. Offensive pressure came in waves at times, defensive structure tightened as games wore on, and the belief within the lineup never wavered. Even when trailing, the Frontenacs pushed back and clawed their way back into games, a sign of a team that is building not just skill, but identity.<\/span><\/p>\n

That identity will be the foundation moving forward. With a young core returning and a season\u2019s worth of growth behind them, Kingston now has something more tangible than potential, they have experience. The kind that can\u2019t be taught in practice or replicated in the regular season. The kind that comes from battling through a playoff series and understanding exactly how thin the line is between extending a season and watching it end.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the page turns to the 2026-27 season, the Frontenacs will carry both the disappointment of an early exit and the motivation that comes with it. The standard has been set. The path is clearer. For a group that has already shown its willingness to compete, the next step is turning those lessons into results.<\/span><\/p>\n

The season may be over, but the pursuit is just beginning for this young, talented Frontenacs core.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kingston, ON – <\/strong>The Kingston Frontenacs had their backs against the wall as they entered game four of their first round matchup against the Ottawa 67’s; down 3-0 in the series and needing a win in a do or die matchup on Thursday night.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span> Kingston has had trouble with their starts to games so far in this series, and that would unfortunately continue tonight as Sam McCue scored under a minute after the game got under way. The nightmare start continued for the Frontenacs with a goal from Nic Sima making it 2-0 under three minutes into the contest; thus ending Matt Minchak’s night between the pipes before it ever really got going, being replaced by Gavin Betts. Being down 2-0 that early in the game clearly wasn’t ideal, but that gave the black and gold a lot of runway to get back in it.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span> Just beyond the halfway point of the first, Matthew Frost would get the comeback attempt going. Riley Clark burst into the Ottawa zone as a one man wrecking crew, bullying his way through a crowd. Clark’s shot hit a body and went wide, but the puck eventually fell to Frost who roofed it over the glove of Ryder Fetterolf to cut the 67’s lead in half.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span> With their season on the line the Frontenacs came out of the gates swinging to start the second period; with Robin Kuzma tying the game just a 1:07 into the middle stanza. Maleek McGowan rushed from the blueline towards the left corner and fed a pass through the crease to Kuzma for a tap-in and the tying goal. Kingston’s bench and crowd alike could feel the momentum swing as the black and gold dominated the second period, outshooting the 67’s 11-4 and spending a lot of time in the Ottawa end, but couldn’t find a go ahead goal before the third period got underway.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

\r\n\r\n<\/span> The third period was a back and forth battle of attrition between the two sides, as both teams traded sustained pressure in the opposition\u2019s zone. Gavin Betts came up with huge saves and Ryder Fetterolf was there to match. Just when everyone thought the game was going to overtime, Filip Ekberg made his presence known. Ekberg drove the net with just 30 seconds to play and beat Gavin Betts on the short side, giving the 67\u2019s a 3-2 lead with virtually no time remaining.<\/span> \r\n\r\n<\/span> With little time left to play, the Frontenacs weren\u2019t able to get an equalizer, thus ending their season in game four. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Although a sweep in the first round is never an easy thing to swallow, there are a lot of positives to take away from a young team that did better than many expected.
