Recap: Kingston puts on a show for the Home Opener, but comes up short in 3-2 defeat to Oshawa
Scoring Summary:
1st Period
No scoring.
2nd Period
KGN 0, OSH 1
6:34 Ethan Toms (1) – unassisted
After Emil Pieniniemi had his point shot blocked by a Generals defender, Ethan Toms corralled the loose puck and went flying up the left wing into the Kingston zone on a 2-on-1. Toms opted to shoot and he beat Nolan Lalonde clean to open the scoring.
KGN 0, OSH 2
10:54 Owen Griffin (1) – Luca Marelli, Matthew Buckley
In what admittedly was a great passing play from the Generals, Owen Griffin ended up tapping the puck into a wide open cage. Matthew Buckley found Luca Marelli who faked a shot and fed it across the ice to Griffin who had all the time in the world to tap the puck into the open cage.
KGN 1, OSH 2
13:24 Matthew Soto (1) – Jacob Battaglia, Tuomas Uronen (PPG)
The Frontenacs scored their first goal on home ice of the new season in an equally as impressive passing play. Cedrick Guindon entered the zone and fed Tuomas Uronen. The Finnish import found Jacob Battaglia at the side of the net who found Matthew Soto for a tap in.
3rd Period
KGN 2, OSH 2
0:56 – Jacob Battaglia (2) – Emil Pieniniemi, Cedrick Guindon (PPG)
The Frontenacs powerplay has looked lethal in each of their two games so far this season, and the extra man unit would strike for the second time in this game just under a minute into the third period. Jacob Battaglia fired a shot towards the Generals net which Jacob Oster saved, but the puck went up into the air and off the back of Oster before just crossing the goal line to tie the game up at two a side.
KGN 2, OSH 3
12:41 Luca Marelli (1) – Owen Griffin, Luke Torrance (PPG)
With a man advantage and tons of pressure being applied, the Generals would break through with the game winning goal off the stick of Luca Marelli. Owen Griffin teed the puck up on a silver platter for Marelli to blast a one-timer through traffic in front of the net and it beat Nolan Lalonde.
After a late push with Lalonde on the bench for the extra attacker the Frontenacs had their chances to tie the game up but were shut down by Oster and the Oshawa defensive core. A hard fought battle in the first of eight games between the two teams and bitter rivals is just a preview of what’s to come further down the line.
Upcoming Home Game:
Friday, September 29th vs Niagara – 2:00PM
The Frontenacs will close out Opening Week with our first Sunday Funday of the season. Much like last year, our Sunday Funday events will feature inflatables, face painters and balloon artists; making this a great afternoon for the entire family! The Frontenacs split the season series with the Niagara IceDogs last season, with each team winning two games a piece. The Frontenacs have higher expectations this season, and so do the IceDogs as they look to take the next step in their rebuild.
Much like last year, our Sunday Funday events will feature inflatables, face painters and balloon artists; making this a great afternoon for the entire family! This Sunday we will also be honouring goaltender Mason Vaccari for his CHL & OHL Humanitarian of the Year Awards that he won over the summer thanks to his fundraising efforts through ‘Mason’s Miracles’. Vaccari was able to raise $13,200+ for the Pediatric Wing at Kingston General Hospital at Kingston Health Sciences Centre, and we are proud to celebrate his accomplishments prior to puck drop this Sunday.
