Kingston, ON - The Kingston Frontenacs added another promising group of young players to the organization during the 2026 OHL Priority Selection, continuing to build for the future while hosting one of the most historic draft weekends in league history.

Held on home turf inside of Slush Puppie Place, the 2026 OHL Priority Selection marked the Ontario Hockey League's first in-person draft since 2000, with Kingston serving as host for the league-wide event. Prospects, families, team personnel, and fans gathered throughout the weekend to celebrate the next generation of OHL talent.

Leading the way for the Frontenacs was first round selection Logan Prud'homme, chosen 10th overall on Friday evening. The highly-skilled forward joins the organization after a standout season with Upper Canada College; bringing a combination of size, offensive ability, and long-term potential to Kingston's prospect pool.

“It's rare you get a player with his combination of size, skill, and athleticism,” said Kingston Head Scout Aaron Van Leusen. “He scored some big goals in big moments this year and we believe he has a very high ceiling. He's a player that has a lot of maturity and is a leader both on and off the ice. He doesn't rest on his talent and puts the work in to continually improve his game.”

Over the course of the draft, the Frontenacs focused on adding talent across all positions, selecting players who fit the organization's commitment to skill, character, competitiveness, and hockey sense. The draft class features a diverse mix of forwards, defencemen, and a goaltender who will look to develop within the organization over the coming years.

Brantford 99ers forward Roman Vanacker came in at pick 23, the first name on the board for the Frontenacs to kick off day two of the festivities. The brother of Brantford Bulldogs forward and Chicago Blackhawks first round pick Marek Vanacker is lauded for his goal scoring prowess and tenacious skating.

“He was the captain of his team in Brantford and dragged them into the fight each game with his compete,” said Van Leusen. “His play away from the puck creates a lot of turnovers and transition opportunities. Inside the blueline he's an equally strong playmaker and goal scorer.”

The Delhi, ON native isn't just impressive on the ice. During the pre-draft interview process, General Manager Kory Cooper was blown away with his character and leadership.

“When we asked his coaches and support staff about his character we were blown away by the answers we received,” said Cooper. “Everyone we spoke to said Roman is of very high character and takes care of his teammates both on and off the ice. He wore the C for a reason with the 99ers and is quite an impressive player."

Later in the second round the Frontenacs took towering defenceman Shane Roche from the Toronto Marlboros. Standing at 6'3'', Roche can bring a little bit of everything from the blueline.

“He is a tall left shot defender that is rangy as he has good feet and transitions well for his size,” said Van Leusen. “He was very consistent with his first pass and getting the puck moving north. Inside the offensive zone, he showed great poise and an ability to get his shot on net or hit an open teammate through a seam.”

Rounding out the first three rounds, the Frontenacs selected mobile defenceman Gavin Godick from the Don Mills Flyers; rounding out their first three rounds with two forwards and two defencemen.

“Gavin is a right shot defenceman that has a good touch for the puck,” said Van Leusen. “He moves well laterally in the offensive zone and can open up a lot of shooting and passing lanes. Most importantly he can defend hard and is tough to beat 1 on 1.”

The 2026 draft class joins a young and exciting core already in place in Kingston, providing further optimism for the future of the franchise. As these prospects begin their journey with the Frontenacs, fans can look forward to watching the newest members of the organization develop and work toward wearing the black and gold at the OHL level.

With another successful draft weekend complete, the Frontenacs have taken an important step toward strengthening the organization's future while helping deliver a memorable and historic event for the Ontario Hockey League.

Kingston, ON - The Kingston Frontenacs added three pieces to their prospect pool during the 2026 OHL U18 Priority Selection, selecting defencemen Presley Kelly-Wright and Cole Coughlin, along with goaltender Owen Bienstman.

The trio brings a blend of upside, size, and positional depth as the Frontenacs continue building for the future.

Leading the class is right-shot defenseman Presley Kelly-Wright, a 5-foot-11 blueliner from Ottawa Myers Automotive U18 AAA. Kelly-Wright enjoyed a productive season from the back end, showcasing his ability to contribute offensively while playing significant minutes in all situations. His strong puck-moving ability and offensive instincts helped him emerge as one of the top-scoring defensemen on his club, recording 26 points in 21 games during league play.

"I was very excited to see Kelly-Wright fall to us at the 10th overall pick," said Frontenacs Director of Player Personnel Bob Breckles. "He's a dynamic, two-way defenceman with elite, high-end skating and he defends well in his own end. We can't wait to have him out at Development Camp to see how he fits in." continued Breckles.

Kingston's second selection, Owen Bienstman, adds a promising young goaltender to the organization. The Tilbury, Ontario native stands 6-foot and catches left, providing the Frontenacs with another athletic option between the pipes. Bienstman spent the season with the Elgin Middlesex Canucks U18 AAA program and has shown the size and technical foundation that teams covet in developing netminders.

"Owen is a goalie with great size and a winning pedigree in Elgin-Middlesex this season," said Frontenacs General Manager Kory Cooper. "He has a great presence in the net nad never gives up on a play." continued Cooper.

Rounding out the class is defenseman Cole Coughlin of the North Shore Whitecaps U18 AAA. At 6-foot-2 and nearly 180 pounds, Coughlin brings a physical presence to the blue line. A left-shot defender from Belleville, Ontario, he combines his size with strong mobility and projects as a player capable of making an impact at both ends of the ice as he continues his development.

"Cole is a big strong defender that has a lot of intagibles," said Frontenacs Director of Player Personnel Bob Breckles. "He has a lot of character and physicality that we could certainly use on the backend." continued Breckles.

While each player arrives with a unique skill set, the common theme throughout Kingston's 2026 U18 Priority Selection class is versatility. As these players continue their progression, the Frontenacs will be eager to see how this year's U18 draft class develops into future contributors for the black and gold. Stay tuned to Kingston Frontenacs social media channels for updates on development camp and training camp as they become available.
It’s now less than a week until the Ontario Hockey League ascends upon Kingston for the first in-person OHL Priority Selection since the year 2000. Let’s turn our attention to the junior career of the fifth exceptional player in OHL history and the Kingston Frontenacs' last first overall selection, Shane Wright.

It was a no-doubter. After scoring 66 goals and 150 points in 72 games, all while playing with guys a year older than he was, Shane Wright was granted exceptional status for the 2019 OHL Priority Selection. Adding to his accolades before even being selected, Wright would score 18 points in 7 OHL Cup games, earning the tournament MVP in the process.

Coming off the 2017-18 campaign that saw the Frontenacs in the third round of the playoffs, 2018-19 was a down year for Kingston with key players like Jason Robertson, Gabriel Vilardi, and Jeremy Helvig all moving on. The struggling Frontenacs won just 14 games, earning them the first overall selection. Which, of course, was Shane Wright.

Wright immediately made an impact for the Frontenacs. Leading the team in scoring at just 15 years old, Wright scored 39 times and adding 27 assists in 58 games. Wright’s rookie season was highly decorated, winning the OHL and CHL Rookie of the Year awards. Unfortunately, the world had other plans for a Frontenacs team on the rise. The COVID-19 pandemic hit North America in March of 2020, cancelling the rest of the 2019-20 season and all of the 2020-21 season.

When hockey returned for the 2021-22 season, Wright was a 17-year-old entering his draft year. Now the captain of the Frontenacs, the fifth exceptional status player in OHL history, earned that title. In 63 games, Wright scored 94 points and added another 14 in 11 playoff games. The Frontenacs fell to the North Bay Battalion in the second round that year, and Wright turned his attention to the NHL Draft after receiving the CHL Top Draft Prospect award.

After being selected fourth overall by the Seattle Kraken in 2022, Wright spent the first half of the season between the NHL club and their AHL affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds. Wright would be loaned to the Canadian World Junior team and would captain a loaded squad to a Gold Medal in Halifax. After recording seven points in seven games, Wright would be reassigned to the OHL, where he was flipped to the Windsor Spitfires for a haul of picks and players that would help the Frontenacs set up their future.

After finishing his junior career in Windsor, Wright turned pro full-time, spending the majority of his time in the AHL as a 20-year-old. Since then, the former Frontenacs centreman has been full-time with a young Kraken team and looks to be a key piece for the organization moving forward.

Kingston, ON – General Manager Kory Cooper has made another deal with the Brantford Bulldogs ahead of the trade window closing on Thursday, June 11th; this time acquiring Ryan Chamberlain and draft picks in exchange for Camden McCuaig.

Originally drafted by the Sarnia Sting in the 5th round, 101st overall of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection, Chamberlain had 19 points (6 goals, 13 assists) in 27 regular season games for the Brantford Titans (GOJHL) this season. Chamberlain also appeared in 17 games for the Bulldogs, collecting a pair of assists on a deep Brantford squad. The 6'2'', 181lbs forward adds good depth to the Frontenacs roster ahead of the 2026-27 season.

"Ryan is a very strong skater with good instincts on both sides of the puck." said Frontenacs General Manager Kory Cooper. "He has good size and can play down the middle or on the wing, adding flexibility for our forward group. We're excited to see how he fits in our lineup."

McCuaig was drafted by the Frontenacs in the 5th round, 87th overall in the 2024 OHL Priority Selection and made his OHL debut on November 8th, 2024 on home ice against the Oshawa Generals. The Williamstown, ON native would score his first OHL goal on December 28th, 2025 against the Ottawa 67's and would go on to put up 6 points (3 goals, 3 assists) in 17 regular season appearances for the black and gold. McCuaig would spend most of the year with the Cornwall Colts (CCHL), putting up 42 points (18 goals, 24 assists) in 40 games.

"McCuaig has been a hard-working player since he arrived in Kingston. Camden was seeking a new opportunity for an expanded role and we are glad we were able to provide him with that. We'd like to thank Camden for his dedication during his time here and we wish him the best of luck in this new opportunity." continued Cooper. "Adding the additional third round pick for next season gives us more draft capital and balances out our draft board as we had more picks than we would have liked for the draft this week."

The 2026 OHL Priority Selection is just over a week away, which gives us a chance to look back at the junior hockey career of one of the most prominent Kingston Frontenacs in the NHL today, Sam Bennett.

After winning a silver medal in the 2012 OHL Cup, the Frontenacs selected forward Sam Bennett with the ninth overall pick and immediately, the team knew they had a future superstar on their hands. Bennett came to Kingston and made an instant impact with 40 points in 60 games as a rookie, 18 of those being goals, and led to Bennett receiving OHL Second All-Rookie team honours.

As a rookie, Bennett would also represent Canada twice. First at the U-17 Championships in Windsor and then later at the U-18 World Championship in Sochi, Russia. Between the two tournaments, the Frontenacs forward recorded 13 points in 12 games. With the confidence of his international success and another summer to grow, Bennett returned to Kingston in the fall and turned the league upside down. 36 goals and 55 assists for 91 points, all while still playing that edge he has become famous for with the Florida Panthers. The play would continue into the playoffs, where he added another nine points in seven games.

The following summer, Bennett would make national headlines by being awarded the CHL Top Prospect Award, and when June rolled around, it didn’t take long for his name to be called in the NHL draft. In a star-studded draft class with names like Leon Draisaitl, William Nylander, and David Pastrnak, Bennett was selected fourth overall by the Calgary Flames and signed his entry-level contract before the 2014-15 season. Staying with the Flames for their off-season programming and training camps, Bennett would need shoulder surgery in October of 2014, keeping him sidelined until February.

The fourth-overall pick of the draft would be reassigned to Kingston and play 11 games for the Frontenacs in the regular season, scoring at over a two-point per game pace with 24 to close the year. After the Frontenacs were eliminated in the 2015 OHL playoffs, Bennett was recalled by the Flames for their playoff run and never looked back.

The Frontenacs alumni spent the first four and a half seasons of his pro career with the Flames before being dealt to the Florida Panthers at the trade deadline in 2021. Since then, Bennett’s career has taken off.

Consistently scoring in the range of 50 points every year since the trade, Bennett has been a key piece in the Florida Panthers' success, playing in three straight Stanley Cup Finals and winning back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2024 and 2025. In the second of the two Stanley Cup runs, Bennett scored 15 goals in 23 playoff games, earning him the Conn Smythe trophy as the playoffs MVP.

Bennett has also continued his success wearing the red and white. Starting at the NHL 4 Nations Tournament, scoring a massive goal in the championship game to give Canada its first lead against the U.S.A., Bennett also made the trip to Italy for the 2026 Olympic Games, where he and his fellow Canadian teammates captured the Silver Medal.

Over 10 years after wearing the Frontenacs sweater, Bennett still represents the talent that comes from Kingston and will for the foreseeable future, signing an 8-year, $64 million contract to stay with the Florida Panthers in the summer of 2025.
