The 2025-26 season came to a close sooner than the Kingston Frontenacs would have liked, but not without promise. A first round sweep at the hands of the Ottawa 67’s tells only part of the story. Beneath the surface, this was a series defined by tight margins, hard lessons, and a young group beginning to understand what it takes to compete when the stakes are at their highest.

When the dust settled on the trade deadline and the team had moved on from Jacob Battaglia, Tyler Hopkins and Andrew Kuzma; the general consensus around the league was that Kingston had thrown in the towel and committed to getting a high draft pick this season. The moves saw younger players get elevated into bigger roles and the team consistently got better as the season went on, finishing sixth in the Eastern Conference.

The Frontenacs earned their place in the postseason through consistency, good habits and a strong work ethic; finishing much higher than most anticipated. When the playoffs arrived, they were met with a structured and experienced Ottawa squad that executed in key moments.

Despite being swept, Kingston was far from overmatched. Each contest was competitive, with the Frontenacs showing resilience, pushing pace, and refusing to back down; fighting back in multiple games to tie the game up and push back against the 67's. It was a series that demanded near perfect hockey, and that's something the Frontenacs just were not ready for. Junior hockey is a cyclical sport and this wasn't Kingston's time, not yet.

For Kingston, the value of this experience cannot be overstated. Playoff hockey introduces a different standard; one where details are magnified, time and space disappear, and every mistake carries weight. That lesson was felt in real time by a core of young players who were thrust into meaningful roles over the course of the season.

Alex McLean was acquired in a trade with the Guelph Storm around the trade deadline and ended up leading the team in points. Rookies Aleks Kulemin, Nolan Snyder and Robin Kuzma formed 'The Kid Line' and were relied upon heavily down the stretch and rose to the occasion many times. Matthew Henderson showed maturity beyond his years as a first-year defenseman and played big minutes in the playoffs. Gavin Betts won multiple OHL Goaltender of the week honours this season and looks poised to have a breakout season next year, taking that next step. Many players took important steps forward, gaining first hand exposure to the intensity and discipline required to win in the postseason.

There were flashes throughout the series that offered a glimpse of what this group can become. Offensive pressure came in waves at times, defensive structure tightened as games wore on, and the belief within the lineup never wavered. Even when trailing, the Frontenacs pushed back and clawed their way back into games, a sign of a team that is building not just skill, but identity.

That identity will be the foundation moving forward. With a young core returning and a season’s worth of growth behind them, Kingston now has something more tangible than potential, they have experience. The kind that can’t be taught in practice or replicated in the regular season. The kind that comes from battling through a playoff series and understanding exactly how thin the line is between extending a season and watching it end.

As the page turns to the 2026-27 season, the Frontenacs will carry both the disappointment of an early exit and the motivation that comes with it. The standard has been set. The path is clearer. For a group that has already shown its willingness to compete, the next step is turning those lessons into results.

The season may be over, but the pursuit is just beginning for this young, talented Frontenacs core.

Toronto, ON – The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) is proud to announce the Seaway Shootout, a special two-game event bringing major junior hockey back to the city of Cornwall.

The historic Cornwall Civic Complex will serve as the backdrop for this exciting weekend, with the Brampton Steelheads playing regular season games against two Eastern Conference opponents in the Ottawa 67’s on Friday, October 16 and the Kingston Frontenacs on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

"We are incredibly thrilled to bring OHL hockey back to Cornwall for the Seaway Shootout," said OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford. "This is a community with deep, foundational roots in major junior hockey. Returning to a city that has developed legendary talents and boasts such a rich Memorial Cup history is a special opportunity for our league, our players, and the great hockey fans of Eastern Ontario.

"The level of care taken to preserve the history of the Royals at the Civic Complex is truly remarkable," added Crawford. "Seeing the artifacts and historical visuals so proudly displayed throughout the venue speaks volumes about the deep, enduring passion for hockey that still exists in Cornwall."

Seaway Shootout Event Schedule

The weekend will feature a variety of community and hockey events leading up to and surrounding the OHL matchups:

Friday, October 16, 2026: Free Public Open Skate – 4:00pm to 5:00pm

Friday, October 16, 2026: Brampton Steelheads vs. Ottawa 67’s, 7:00pm

Saturday, October 17, 2026: Seaway Hockey Day (Benson Centre)

Saturday, October 17, 2026: Brampton Steelheads vs. Kingston Frontenacs, 7:00pm

Located in Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Counties, the city of approximately 50,000 residents has a storied and highly decorated hockey legacy. Cornwall is the historic home of the Cornwall Royals, who played in the QMJHL from 1969 to 1981, capturing three Memorial Cup titles (1972, 1980, and 1981). The franchise subsequently competed in the OHL from 1981 through the 1991-92 season before relocating to Newmarket, and has operated as the Sarnia Sting since 1994-95. During its major junior era, Cornwall developed Hockey Hall of Famers and legends of the game, including Dale Hawerchuk, Doug Gilmour, and Marc Crawford.

“The Seaway Shootout will see the return of regular season OHL games in Cornwall for the first time in decades,” said Cornwall Mayor Justin Towndale. “Over the years, the City of Cornwall has continued to make meaningful investments and upgrades in the Civic Complex, and this event is a testament to those investments. We are excited about this partnership with the OHL and look forward to continuing this renewed relationship well into the future.”

Cornwall’s impact on professional hockey extends from the ice to the bench and the officiating crew. The city has produced notable figures including former NHL referee Bob Kilger and his son, Chad Kilger, a Kingston Frontenacs alumnus who enjoyed a lengthy NHL playing career. It is also the hometown of the late Orval Tessier, a prominent coach who led both the Royals and the OHL's Kitchener Rangers before taking the helm as head coach of the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks.

The Seaway Shootout will be hosted at the Ed Lumley Arena within the Cornwall Civic Complex. The venue is no stranger to high-level hockey, having recently hosted 2024 IIHF World Junior pre-tournament competition as well as the 2022 World Junior A Challenge. The Complex has also been the proud home of the Central Canada Hockey League's (CCHL) Cornwall Colts since 1992.

Ticket information, game times, and broadcast details for the 2026 Seaway Shootout will be announced at a later date.

Kingston, ON - Facing elimination on home ice, the Kingston Frontenacs return to the ice tonight at Slush Puppie Place for Game Four of their opening round series against the Ottawa 67’s, with puck drop set for 7:05PM. Down 3-0 in the best of seven matchup, it’s do or die for Kingston as they look to extend their season and take one game at a time.

Game Three on Tuesday night told a much tighter story than the 4-1 final score would indicate. The Frontenacs delivered a structured, determined effort, particularly in the defensive zone, and were locked in a one goal battle for much of the night. Goaltender Matt Minchak was a standout once again, turning aside quality chances and giving Kingston every opportunity to stay within striking distance. His performance kept the game at 1-0 deep into the third period, as the Frontenacs continued to press for a breakthrough.

However, the veteran presence of Ottawa proved to be the difference late. The 67’s capitalized on a brief lapse as Jasper Kuhta and Sam McCue scored twice in quick succession in the third period to create separation before sealing the win with an empty net goal from Nic Sima. Despite the final scoreline, Kingston showed they can match Ottawa’s pace and structure when playing to their identity.

Now, the challenge becomes turning that effort into results. The Frontenacs will need to find a way to generate more sustained offensive pressure and capitalize on their chances, particularly against a disciplined Ottawa team that has limited time and space throughout the series. Attention to detail, especially in key moments, will be critical if Kingston hopes to flip the script.

With their backs against the wall, expect a desperate and energized group from Kingston. Playing in front of their home crowd, the opportunity is there to spark a comeback; one game at a time.

Kingston, ON - The series shifts back to Kingston tonight with plenty on the line for the Frontenacs, who return home trailing 2-0 in their opening round matchup against the Ottawa 67’s. Despite the uphill climb, there’s a confidence around the group after two games in the nation’s capital that showed this series is far tighter than the results suggest.

Game one may have gotten away from Kingston on the scoreboard, but it was a back and forth battle that could have tilted either way for long stretches. In game two, the Frontenacs took a clear step forward; especially in the third period, where they pushed the pace, controlled possession, and made life difficult for Ottawa in all three zones. It was the kind of response that can carry over into a pivotal game three on home ice. There's a sense in the Frontenacs mind that they can win.

That late push in Ottawa is something Kingston will look to build on tonight. When the Frontenacs are at their best, they’re aggressive on the forecheck, disruptive through the neutral zone, and relentless around the net. If they can replicate that third period intensity over a full 60 minutes, they’ll give themselves a strong chance to flip the momentum in this series.

Discipline and execution will be key. Ottawa has proven they can capitalize on mistakes, and Kingston will need to limit turnovers while staying structured defensively. At the same time, generating more traffic in front of Ryder Fetterolf in the 67’s net and cashing in on scoring chances will be critical in breaking through.

Now, backed by a home crowd and a familiar environment, the Frontenacs have an opportunity to reset the tone of the series. Game three isn’t just important it’s a turning point. A win brings Kingston right back into the fight, while another strong performance could shift all the pressure onto Ottawa heading into game four.
