RECAP: Training Camp wraps up with final Black vs Gold Scrimmage
Kingston, ON – The final day of training camp saw one last scrimmage between Team Black and Team Gold, with plenty of trades between the two sides before the drop of the puck. It was the final chance for players to make a lasting impression on the front office before OHL preseason action kicks off this weekend and try to lock down a spot on the roster.
RECAP: BLACK (6) – GOLD (7)
For the third consecutive scrimmage Team Black opened the scoring. Jacob Battaglia put his team ahead with a beautiful move to drive the net and tucked it around the outstretched pad of Nolan Lalonde. Battaglia would get involved again soon after as he made a drop pass to Tyler Hopkins who fired it off the post and into the back of the net.
The line of Battaglia, Hopkins, and 2024 5th round selection Camden McCuaig had some solid chemistry and the trio had some dominant stretches in the offensive zone. Team Black also had a defensive pair of Quinton Burns and Emil Pieniniemi patrolling the blue line. After playing in his first scrimmage yesterday, Pieniniemi looked even more comfortable out on the ice today. The Finnish defender was poised and showed great skating abilities as he created chances all over the ice.
Much like yesterday, Team Gold would try mounting a comeback as they would cut into a 3-0 deficit with a goal from Ethan Miedema. Luke McNamara and Cal Uens would also score for Team Gold heading down the stretch. The teams would trade goals late and would head to overtime knotted up at 6 a side.
The puck dropped on overtime and the referee’s whistle never went again. Maleek McGowan sent a stretch pass from his own blueline up to Ethan Miedema who outmuscled his man and slotted the game-goal through the five-hole to seal the victory for Team Gold.
