Recap: Frontenacs begin the new season with victory over the Petes
Scoring Summary:
1st Period
KGN 1, PBO 0
0:43 Maleek McGowan (1) – Jacob Battaglia, Tyler Hopkins
The black and gold found the back of the net just 43 seconds into their 24/25 campaign off an offensive zone faceoff win. Tyler Hopkins won the draw, Jacob Battaglia collected the loose puck and fed it to Maleek McGowan who would then walk in and snipe the puck short side on Petes’ goaltender Zach Bowen to open the goal scoring for the Fronts on the season.
KGN 2, PBO 0
19:30 Ben Pickell (1) – unassisted (SHG)
Our first goal of the season belongs to Maleek McGowan, but the first shorthanded goal of the Fronts’ season belongs to Ben Pickell. Pickell intercepted a pass along his own blueline and hustled down the ice all alone and beat Bowen with a beautiful backhand move. The goal is Pickell’s first as a member of the Frontenacs in his very first game, and if he keeps scoring goals like this one; he’ll be a fan favourite in Kingston in no time.
2nd Period
KGN 2, PBO 1
1:28 Chase Lefebvre (1) – Nico Addy, Blake Gowan
KGN 3, PBO 1
5:38 Ethan Miedema (1) – Vann Williamson
In a quick response to Peterborough getting on the board, Vann Williamson found Ethan Miedema streaking in alone on a partial break and Miedema wired the puck by Zach Bowen to give his team a two goal lead once again.
KGN 3, PBO 2
8:40 Caden Taylor (1) – Chase Lefebvre, Aiden Young (PPG)
KGN 4, PBO 2
10:44 Luke McNamara (1) – Jacob Battaglia, Matthew Soto
Once again responding quickly to Peterborough finding the back of the net; Luke McNamara finished off a pretty passing play that went from the Fronts’ defensive zone all the way down the ice to the offensive zone. Matthew Soto and Jacob Battaglia ran a give and go before Battaglia dished it off the McNamara who outwaited Zach Bowen and tucked it in at the side of the net to restore the two goal cushion.
KGN 5, PBO 2
16:54 – Jacob Battaglia (1) – Cedrick Guindon, Emil Pieniniemi (PPG)
With their powerplay units buzzing but unable to find the back of the net up to this point in the contest, the Fronts’ powerplay was bound to breakthrough at some point. Cedrick Guindon fired a shot towards the screened Zach Bowen and Jacob Battaglia got a piece of it at the side of the net as the Frontenacs continued to pile on the goals.
3rd Period
KGN 6, PBO 2
4:52 Tyler Hopkins (1) – Emil Pieniniemi, Tuomas Uronen (PPG)
Tyler Hopkins is hoping for a big campaign since it’s his NHL Draft year, and Hopkins provided the world with a goal of the year contender in game number one. Hopkins took a pass from Emil Pieniniemi and entered the offensive zone with bursting speed before splitting the defenders in front of him and chipping the puck into the top corner over the glove of Bowen. An absolutely unreal solo effort from the former 4th overall pick definitely has the eye of scouts after that one.
KGN 7, PBO 2
19:55 – Luke McNamara (2) – Tyler Hopkins, Quinton Burns (PPG)
Just before the final horn sounded, Luke McNamara would find his second of the night on the man advantage as he blasted a second by Bowen. McNamara finished the contest an assist shy of a Gordie Howe hat-trick, with five for fighting and two goals on the evening in a statement victory for the black and gold.
