FLINT –<\/b> The Flint Firebirds announced on Wednesday that Matt Merrifield has been hired as the team\u2019s Director of Communications and Play-by-Play Announcer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI am so excited to be able to stay in Flint,\u201d Merrifield said. \u201cThe energy and passion that Birds fans bring to the rink every night is truly special. I am grateful that I get to continue working for the Firebirds and in the OHL.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Merrifield spent the past two seasons with the Firebirds as an intern and broadcast and communications assistant under Brian Gardner, while also serving as the fill-in broadcaster for select games. A native of Macomb, Michigan, Merrifield graduated from Michigan State University with bachelor’s degrees in sports journalism and social relations & policy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At Michigan State, Merrifield served as the Sports Broadcast Director for the student radio station, Impact 89FM, where he broadcast Spartan Athletics on radio and TV for Big Ten StudentU. He was a finalist for multiple broadcast awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters and several national organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We are proud to announce Matt’s promotion to Director of Communications and Play-by-Play Announcer,\u201d Firebirds President Jeremy Torrey said. \u201cAfter two seasons in our broadcast department’s internship program and his extensive experience with Michigan State University Athletics, Matt has earned the opportunity to become the next voice of the Flint Firebirds. We’re excited to see him excel in this new role as he helps tell the stories of Firebirds Hockey.”\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Merrifield will be on the call for Firebirds games all season long. You can hear him for the first time when Flint starts its season on Sept. 19 in Saginaw against the Spirit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

EDMONTON, Alberta –<\/b> Two Flint Firebirds were picked to play for their respective countries’ Under-18 national teams at the 2026 Hlinka Gretzky Cup from Aug. 3-8 in Edmonton. Forward Charlie Murata was chosen to play for Team Canada and goaltender Mason Courville was selected for Team USA.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Murata finished his rookie season in Flint with five goals and 13 assists in 59 games. He was taken eighth overall in the 2025 OHL Priority Selection Draft as the Firebirds\u2019 first-round pick. Murata is eligible for the 2027 NHL Draft and committed to play NCAA hockey at Michigan State University.<\/span><\/p>\n

This will be the second time that the Scarborough, Ontario native will represent his home country. Last fall, Murata was chosen to play for Canada Red at the 2025 U17 World Challenge. He showed out with four goals and six assists in five games, and helped his squad bring home a gold medal.<\/span><\/p>\n

Courville, from Palmyra, Pennsylvania, was the 55th overall pick in the third round of the 2025 OHL Priority Selection Draft by Flint. In 18 games as an OHL rookie, Courville posted an 8-8-1-1 record with a 3.06 goals-against average and .893 save percentage. He represented the United States last summer in the 2025 U17 Four Nations Tournament. Courville finished with a 1-1-0 record in three starts, as his squad lost in the tournament final.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both Canada and the United States open tournament play on Aug. 3. The United States takes on Czechia at 3 p.m. ET and Canada starts with Switzerland at 7 p.m. ET. Both matchups will air on NHL Network.<\/span><\/p>\n

Flint opens its season on Sept. 19 in Saginaw against the Spirit. The home opener for the Firebirds is on Saturday, Sept. 26 against the Niagara IceDogs. Puck drop at the Dort Financial Center is set for 7 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n

FLINT –<\/b> The Flint Firebirds announced on Saturday that they have signed goaltender Liam Edgcumbe to a Standard Player Agreement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m super excited to be signing with the Firebirds,\u201d Edgcumbe said. \u201cThis has been a dream of mine since draft day in 2024.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Edgcumbe was selected by Flint in the eighth round of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection Draft. He made the GOHL Eastern Conference All-Rookie team last season, playing in 20 games for the Pelham Panthers. Edgcumbe posted a 13-6-0 record, with a 2.53 goals-against average and .926 save percentage.<\/span><\/p>\n

Edgcumbe, from Grimsby, Ontario, was named the GOHL Prospect of the Week on Oct. 6, 2025, after delivering back-to-back shutouts for the Panthers early in the season.<\/span><\/p>\n

FLINT –<\/b> The Flint Firebirds announced on Friday that they have signed forward Martins Klaucans to a Standard Player Agreement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very excited for this next chapter,\u201d Klaucans said. \u201cI\u2019ve heard a lot of good things about the organization. I can\u2019t wait to meet the guys and get on the ice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Klaucans was drafted by Flint with the 28th overall selection in the CHL Import Draft in June. He has spent the last two seasons playing in North America, most recently with the Sherbrooke Phoenix in the QMJHL last year. In 50 games with the Phoenix, Klaucans had four goals and seven assists. In 2024-25, he spent the year with the St. Cloud Norsemen of the NAHL.<\/span><\/p>\n

Klaucans is a native of Riga, Latvia, the same hometown as recent Firebirds Darels Uljanskis and Karlis Flugins. He played for his nation\u2019s U18 national team the past three seasons and the U20 national team in the past two.<\/span><\/p>\n

FLINT –<\/b> The Flint Firebirds announced on Friday that they have signed defenseman Landon Pickersgill to a Standard Player Agreement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pickersgill was selected by Flint in the seventh round of the 2025 OHL Priority Selection Draft. He played the 2025-26 season for the Leamington Flyers in the OJHL and was the Flyers\u2019 highest-scoring defenseman with 13 goals and 27 assists in 55 games.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A Windsor, Ontario native, Pickersgill has a commitment to play NCAA hockey at Lake Superior State University. He is the sixth player from Flint\u2019s 2025 OHL Priority Selection Draft class to sign with the Firebirds.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLandon is a puck-moving defenseman who isn’t afraid to push the puck up the ice. His ability to see the ice and high hockey IQ helps benefit his playmaking skills. He skates very well and can cover a lot of real estate quickly to close gaps and win races to the puck.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m super excited and honored by this new opportunity in Flint,\u201d Bray said. \u201cIt\u2019s a privilege to join such a great organization, and I can\u2019t wait to get going.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A native of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Bray was acquired by Flint in a trade with the Brantford Bulldogs on Jan. 1, 2026. Bray was originally drafted in the 10th round of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection Draft by the Kitchener Rangers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bray spent the past two seasons playing for the Sherwood Park Crusaders in the BCHL. He had nine goals and 43 assists in 81 total games for Sherwood Park, including seven goals and 23 assists in the 2025-26 season in 31 games. He is committed to play NCAA hockey at Penn State University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

FLINT \u2013 <\/strong>The Flint Firebirds made two selections during Tuesday\u2019s CHL Import Draft. Flint used the 28th overall pick on Latvian forward Martins Klaucans and then selected Slovakian forward Tomas Selic with the 43rd pick.<\/p>\n

The Firebirds acquired the 28th overall pick from the Kingston Frontenacs as part of a swap that included multiple future CHL Import and OHL Priority Selection draft picks. Flint used that selection on Klaucans, who spent the 2025-26 season playing in the QMJHL for the Sherbrooke Phoenix, where he had four goals and seven assists in 50 games played. That was his second season spent in North America, as he competed for the St. Cloud Norsemen of the NAHL in the 2024-25 season.<\/p>\n

Klaucans has also skated for Latvia\u2019s U18 and U20 national teams in each of the past two seasons. He is a native of Riga, Latvia, the same hometown as 2025-26 Firebird Darels Uljanskis and 2024-25 Firebird Karlis Flugins.<\/p>\n

Flint then selected Selic 15 picks later. The Bratislava, Slovakia native spent the majority of the 2025-26 season playing for HC Kometa Brno U20 in Czechia, where he had 21 goals and 29 assists over 45 games played. He also competed for Slovakia\u2019s U18 national team and had three goals and three assists in seven games during Slovakia\u2019s run to a silver medal at the IIHF U18 World Junior Championships.<\/p>\n

The CHL Import Draft is an annual even during which every team in the Canadian Hockey League (the OHL, WHL and QMJHL) can draft players from outside North America. The three-round draft took place on Tuesday with the order of selection rotating between clubs of each of the CHL\u2019s leagues. Through the CHL Import Draft, each team is permitted to dress and play a maximum of three import players each season. Firebirds also owned the 89th overall selection in the 2026 draft but chose to pass on its final pick.<\/p>\n

The Firebirds will open the 2026-27 season on Saturday, September 19 on the road in Saginaw against the Spirit. One week later the Firebirds will return to Dort Financial Center ice for their home opener, scheduled for Saturday, September 26 at 7 p.m. against the Niagara IceDogs.<\/p>\n

BUFFALO \u2013 <\/strong>Two Flint Firebirds were selected on Saturday afternoon at the 2026 NHL Draft, extending the organization\u2019s streak of having at least one player selected at every draft since the team\u2019s inception in 2015. Darian Anderson was drafted by the New York Rangers and Alex Kostov was taken by the Los Angeles Kings.<\/p>\n

Anderson became the first Firebird selected when the Rangers snagged him in the sixth round with the 163rd<\/sup> overall pick. The Brighton, Mich. native signed with the Firebirds in October of 2025 and went on to put up 20 goals and 25 assists over 60 games played in his first season in Flint. He then tallied six goals and seven assists over eight postseason games. A right wing, Anderson has committed to play NCAA hockey at Clarkson University.<\/p>\n

Kostov then came off the board 14 picks later when the Kings took him with the 177th<\/sup> overall pick, also in the sixth round. He appeared in 47 games for the Firebirds in the 2025-26 season and finished with 24 goals and 31 assists, earning him a selection in what was his third year of draft eligibility. Originally acquired by the Birds via a trade with the Soo Greyhounds in January of 2024, Kostov has totaled 45 goals and 66 assists over 145 career games for the Firebirds. He has announced a commitment to play NCAA hockey at Quinnipiac University.<\/p>\n

The Firebirds continued their streak of having at least one player selected at every draft since the team arrived in Flint in 2015. Flint has now seen 22 players drafted and has had 42 players in franchise history who have been drafted or signed by an NHL team.<\/p>\n

FLINT \u2013 <\/strong>The Canadian Hockey League announced on Wednesday that Firebirds forward Nathan Aspinall has been named a CHL Third Team All-Star for the 2025-26 season.<\/p>\n

Aspinall registered 33 goals and 61 assists over 65 games played during the 2025-26 season. His 61 assists set a new Firebirds franchise record, and his 94 points were the second-most in the OHL. He chipped in with an additional 10 goals and seven assists over eight postseason games. Aspinall was named Flint\u2019s captain during the preseason and was signed to an NHL entry-level contract by the New York Rangers in October.<\/p>\n

The 6\u20197 winger was also named a finalist for the Red Tilson Trophy, which is given annually to the OHL\u2019s most outstanding player, and for the Mickey Renaud Captain\u2019s Trophy, which awarded annually to the OHL team captain that best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice as well as hard work, passion and a dedication to the game of hockey and their community. The OHL named him its First Team All-Star left wing for the 2025-26 season earlier in June. Aspinall led the Firebirds to new franchise records in points (95) and wins (44) during the 2025-26 season.<\/p>\n

The CHL has named annual All-Star teams since the 2022-23 season, when it revived a practice that had not occurred since the 2009-10 season. Aspinall is the first Flint Firebird to ever be named a CHL All-Star.<\/p>\n

FLINT \u2013 <\/strong>The Flint Firebirds announced on Thursday that they have acquired a fifth round OHL Priority Selection draft pick from the Nigara IceDogs in exchange for defenseman Christian Colosimo.<\/p>\n

Colosimo heads to St. Catharines after playing in a total of 22 games across two seasons for the Firebirds, during which he had one goal, one assist and 24 penalty minutes. He also played 23 games for the Aurora Tigers of the OJHL during the 2025-26 season and had four assists and 43 penalty minutes. Colosimo was originally selected by the Firebirds in the fourth round of the 2024 OHL Priority Selection<\/p>\n

Flint will receive Niagara\u2019s 2030 fifth round pick in exchange for Colosimo.<\/p>\n
