The Barrie Colts announced today that the club has signed forward Ben Lombardi to a standard Ontario Hockey League player agreement, adding another American prospect to the organization’s growing pipeline south of the border.<\/p>\n

Lombardi, a 5-foot-11, 194-pound forward who shoots right, joins the Colts out of Brunswick School in Greenwich, Connecticut, where he wrapped up his most recent season in the USHS-Prep ranks. Born March 24, 2008, the 18-year-old brings size, skill and a strong game to the Barrie lineup.<\/p>\n

“Ben’s someone our staff has liked for a while,” said Colts General Manager Marty Williamson<\/em><\/strong>. “He’s a competitive kid who’s put together a strong body of work at Brunswick, and we think there’s a lot of untapped upside in his game as he steps into the OHL.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Lombardi’s move to Barrie also comes with a familiar face already in the room. He and Colts forward Joe Salandra<\/strong><\/em> grew up playing together within the Mid Fairfield Rangers<\/strong> program in Connecticut before both went on to star at Brunswick School<\/strong> \u2014 a shared background the organization expects will help ease Lombardi’s transition into the Barrie dressing room.<\/p>\n

A physical, north-south forward, Lombardi’s game is centred on strong puck protection and a willingness to work the inside of the ice \u2014 traits that scouts believe should translate well to the pace and structure of Ontario Hockey League play.<\/p>\n

With the ink now dry, Lombardi joins a Colts forward group that continues to add depth and character as Barrie looks toward the 2026-27 season.<\/p>\n

The Barrie Colts announced today that the club has signed defenceman Marc Ruggere to a standard OHL player agreement, officially bringing the New Jersey product into the organization’s blue-line pipeline.<\/p>\n

Ruggere, a 6-foot-3, 196-pound right-shot defenceman from Saddle River, New Jersey, was selected by Barrie in the fifth round (87th overall) of the 2026 OHL Priority Selection, a pick acquired via Saginaw. The signing formalizes his commitment to the organization after a summer that saw him weigh a college path before deciding his future was in the CHL.<\/p>\n

\n

“We’re really excited to get Marc’s name on paper,” said Colts General Manager Marty Williamson<\/em><\/strong>. “He’s a big, physical kid who plays with an edge every night. As soon as our staff saw him play, we knew this was a guy who fit the identity we’re building in Barrie.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A stay-at-home defence with an imposing frame and a competitive streak, Ruggere spent last season with the Woodbridge Wolfpack Premier U15 AAA before capping his year with the Detroit Little Caesars at the OHL Cup, where he chipped in a goal over five games against some of the top competition in the region.<\/p>\n

Ruggere’s game is built on details: tight gaps, a heavy stick, and a willingness to make life difficult for opposing forwards below the hoops. Scouts have flagged him as a high-character, high-compete defender who reads plays well for a player his size, giving the Colts a long-term piece who profiles as a shutdown option as he continues to develop.<\/p>\n

With the signing complete, Ruggere joins a Colts blue line that continues to add size and physicality, giving Barrie’s coaching staff another versatile option to develop as the organization builds.<\/p>\n

The Barrie Colts have completed a trade with the Ottawa 67’s, sending forward Jaiden Newton<\/strong> to Ottawa in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2027 OHL Priority Selection \u2014 via Sault Ste. Marie \u2014 and a third-round pick in the 2029 OHL Priority Selection \u2014 via Windsor.<\/p>\n

Newton, a Whitby, Ontario native, was selected by the Colts in the second round \u2014 26th overall \u2014 of the 2023 OHL Priority Selection. The 5-foot-11, 180-pound centre suited up in 67 regular season games for Barrie in 2025-26, recording 7 goals and 12 assists for 19 points. Over his time with the organization, Newton consistently brought energy, a physical edge, and a willingness to compete in all three zones \u2014 traits that made him a valued member of the Colts dressing room. Beyond his contributions on the ice, Newton distinguished himself as a standout in the classroom, earning OHL Central Division Academic Player of the Month honours during his rookie season \u2014 a reflection of the character and work ethic he brought to every area of his time in Barrie.<\/p>\n

The Barrie Colts are proud to announce that first-round pick Lucas Matheson <\/strong>has signed an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the club. The Barrie native joins his hometown team after being selected 17th overall at the 2026 OHL Priority Selection \u2014 a moment that carried a lifetime of meaning for the 16-year-old.<\/p>\n

A puck-moving defenceman out of the Barrie Jr. Colts U16 AAA program, Matheson captained his squad throughout the 2025-26 OMHA season, backing up the “C” with elite offensive numbers: 18 goals and 22 assists for 40 points in 34 regular-season games, then adding 4 goals and 3 assists in 8 playoff contests.<\/p>\n

Matheson <\/strong>reflects on being drafted and now signed by his hometown club<\/p>\n

“It doesn’t feel real, getting the opportunity to be on the ice under the same roof that I’ve been in the stands watching games for as long as I can even remember.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

An exceptional skater with outstanding edge work, Matheson’s development is deeply rooted. Lucas models his game by Montreal’s Lane Hutson as a blueprint for his style of play as an elite offensive defenceman. General Manager Marty Williamson<\/strong><\/em> made clear that Matheson was a priority target from the start of the scouting process, and the organization’s confidence in him hasn’t wavered since.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Lucas is an elite defenceman that we know will translate well into this level and our team. We have watched him all year and believe he will make an impact immediately on and off the ice.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Scouts who followed Matheson throughout the 2025-26 OMHA season consistently flagged him as one of the most exciting defencemen in the entire league to watch. His calling card at the blue line is his deception \u2014 constantly shifting his hips, selling one direction before attacking the other, leaving opposing forwards flat-footed and dangerous slot chances wide open. He’s far from a one-dimensional offensive player, though. Matheson backs up his offensive instincts with reliable defensive-zone play, a physical edge, and the kind of crisp breakout passing that translates immediately at the next level. The consensus among those who watched him all year: he has the tools to be a play-driving defenceman in the OHL.<\/p>\n
