The Barrie Colts announced today that Austin Roots-MacKay<\/strong> has been named the club’s Head Equipment Manager for the upcoming season.<\/p>\n

Roots-MacKay returns to the Colts organization after spending the past few seasons with the club as Assistant Equipment Manager. He remains with the Colts after a stint in the ECHL with the Bloomington Bison, an affiliate of the New York Rangers and Hartford Wolf Pack, where he served as Assistant Equipment Manager and gained valuable experience operating at the professional level.<\/p>\n

With a strong foundation built through his time in Barrie and further developed within a professional organization, Roots-MacKay brings a well-rounded and experienced perspective to the role as he takes over the Colts’ day-to-day equipment operations for the upcoming season.<\/p>\n

The Barrie Colts would like to extend their sincere thanks to Morgan Payne<\/strong>, who has accepted a new opportunity after five seasons as the organization’s Head Equipment Manager.<\/p>\n

Payne’s time with the Colts dates back to 2019, when he joined the organization as Assistant Equipment Manager. He made the transition to Head Equipment Manager in 2021, a role he held through the remainder of his time in Barrie. Throughout his tenure, Payne played a crucial part in the team’s day-to-day equipment operations, serving as a steady and dependable presence behind the scenes. From gameday preparation to the countless details that go into keeping a team running smoothly, Payne was a big part of that area of the organization, and his dedication did not go unnoticed by players, coaches, and staff alike.<\/p>\n

“We want to thank Morgan for his time, his commitment, and everything he brought to this organization over the past seven years,” said Howie Campbell<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Payne now moves on to a new opportunity with the American Hockey League’s Wilkes-Barre\/Scranton Penguins, where he will serve as Assistant Equipment Manager.<\/p>\n

The Barrie Colts, announced today the club’s schedule for 2026 Training Camp. Camp will run from Monday, August 24 through Sunday, August 30 at Sadlon Arena, culminating in the annual Barrie Showcase, a four-team pre-season event on August 29 and 30.<\/p>\n

All Training Camp sessions are free and open to the public, with the exception of the Barrie Showcase, which requires a ticket for entry.<\/p>\n

Monday, August 24 \u2013 Fitness Testing & Practice<\/strong> Camp opens with players divided into four squads \u2013 Navy, Gold, White and Red \u2013 who will rotate through fitness testing and on-ice practice sessions in shifts throughout the day at Sadlon Arena.<\/p>\n

The Barrie Colts announced today that they have acquired forward Luca Testa<\/strong> from the Brantford Bulldogs in exchange for a fifth-round pick in the 2030 OHL Priority Selection and a conditional 14th-round pick in the 2029 OHL Priority Selection.<\/p>\n

Testa, a native of Grimsby, Ont., posted 15 goals and 11 assists for 26 points in 50 games with the Bulldogs this past season. The 19-year-old has spent his OHL career with Brantford after previous stops with the Hamilton Bulldogs and London Knights, and brings size, physicality and offensive upside to the Colts’ forward group.<\/p>\n

“We’ve liked what Luca has brought to the table for a while now, but it was really his compete level in the playoffs last year that stood out to us,” said Colts General Manager Marty Williamson.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Barrie Colts announced today the hiring of Frank Palazzese<\/strong><\/em> as the club’s new Director of Goaltending.<\/p>\n

Palazzese brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the Colts organization. A five-season OHL veteran, he suited up for the Kingston Frontenacs, Kitchener Rangers and Sudbury Wolves before turning pro, where he spent time in the ECHL with the Wheeling Nailers and in the AHL with the Binghamton Senators, Wilkes-Barre\/Scranton Penguins and Hamilton Bulldogs.<\/p>\n

Since retiring from professional hockey, Palazzese has established himself as one of the most respected goaltending instructors in Canada. He has held goaltending coach roles with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, the Sarnia Sting and, most recently, the Brantford Bulldogs, where he served as Director of Goaltending.<\/p>\n

“I am very excited to be joining the Barrie Colts,” said Palazzese. “I would like to thank John Careri, John Winstanley, and Marty Williamson for entrusting me with their goaltending department. Barrie is an elite level organization in the Ontario Hockey League and it is an honor to be joining their staff led by coach Dylan Smoskowitz. The Barrie Colts announced today that Blake Ricci<\/strong><\/em> has joined the organization as Assistant General Manager, effective immediately.<\/p>\n

Ricci arrives in Barrie after serving as General Manager of the Toronto Patriots of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL), where he helped build the club into a Buckland Cup champion during the 2025-26 season. A Toronto native, Ricci brings a strong track record of team-building, player development, and hockey operations experience to his new role with the Colts.<\/p>\n

He will work closely with President of Hockey Operations John Winstanley and Vice President and General Manager Marty Williamson as part of the Colts’ hockey operations leadership group as the organization continues to build toward long-term, sustained success both on and off the ice.<\/p>\n

The Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League announced today that the organization have signed Dylan Smoskowitz<\/strong><\/em> and Marty Williamson<\/strong><\/em> to contract extensions, ensuring both will continue to lead the hockey operations department for years to come.<\/p>\n

President of Hockey Operations John Winstanley<\/strong><\/em> made the announcement, citing the stability and continuity both leaders have brought to the organization.<\/p>\n

“We are extremely excited to announce the extensions of our Head Coach Dylan Smoskowitz<\/strong> as well as Vice President and General Manager Marty Williamson<\/strong>,” said Winstanley. “Both have played an important role in establishing the culture, standards, and direction of our hockey program, and we believe strongly in their ability to continue moving this organization forward. Stability and continuity are important as we build for sustained success,” Winstanley continued. “We want our players, staff, and fans to know that we have a clear vision for where we are going, and these two individuals are a major part of that vision. We have a tremendous amount of confidence in their leadership, their commitment to our players, and their ability to build a winning environment both on and off the ice.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Smoskowitz and Williamson have been fixtures of the Colts organization in recent years. Smoskowitz, a former Colts forward from 2010 to 2012, rejoined the club as Assistant Coach in 2021 before being promoted to Head Coach in 2025. Williamson, who first coached the Colts from 2004 to 2010, returned to the organization in 2020 as General Manager and Head Coach before transitioning to his current role as Vice President and General Manager in 2025.<\/p>\n

The Barrie Colts organization is proud to recognize the strong Colts presence at this year’s Boots and Hearts Barn Burner Charity Hockey Game, held August 6 at Sadlon Arena. The 2026 edition of the annual event set a new fundraising benchmark, generating $702,000 in support of local charities and surpassing last year’s total of just over $605,000. Now in its 18th year, the Barn Burner has become one of Barrie’s signature community events, pairing NHL and PWHL talent with hometown heroes for a night of hockey, live music, and giving back.<\/p>\n

On the ice, the Colts were represented by Aaron Ekblad<\/strong>, a two-time Stanley Cup champion and Colts alumnus who served as captain of Team Denim; Andrew Mangiapane<\/strong>, who spent his junior career with the Colts before going on to an NHL career now with the Chicago Blackhawks and laced up alongside his former teammates; Dylan Smoskowitz<\/strong>, Barrie’s current head coach who also skated in the OHL for Barrie earlier in his career and led the Colts to the OHL Championship Series in his first season behind the bench; Cole Beaudoin<\/strong>, last year’s co-captain who led the entire OHL in scoring this past season; and Lucas Matheson<\/strong>, a Barrie hometown product and the Colts’ first-round pick in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection, making an early appearance in Colts colours in front of the home crowd. Behind the bench was Kyle Clifford<\/strong>, a Colts alumnus and two-time Stanley Cup champion whose No. 13 was retired by the club in 2025, coaching for the night after wrapping a 15-year professional career.<\/p>\n

Their participation continued a tradition of Colts showing up for the Barn Burner, joining the event’s broader lineup of NHL and PWHL stars<\/p>\n

Hosted by Barrie Mayor Alex Nuttall<\/strong> and presented in partnership with the Boots and Hearts Music Festival<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 the Barn Burner has now raised close to $3 million for local causes since its inception. This year’s proceeds will benefit organizations including the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) Foundation<\/strong>, the John Tavares Foundation<\/strong>, PIE Education, local Rotary clubs, Easter Seals<\/strong>, and other community initiatives serving the Barrie region. For an organization built on family and community, it was a genuine pleasure to see so many familiar faces back on home ice, giving their time to a cause that means so much to Barrie.<\/p>\n

The Barrie Colts announced today that John Winstanley<\/strong><\/em> will join the organization as President of Hockey Operations<\/strong>, effective ahead of the upcoming season.<\/p>\n

Winstanley brings extensive hockey management experience to Barrie, including several years as a General Manager within the Ontario Hockey League. He also spent time with the Toronto Junior Canadians of the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL), and has served in an executive capacity with the GTHL itself, giving him a well-rounded background in player development, scouting, and organizational leadership at both the junior and major junior levels.<\/p>\n

Winstanley shared the following remarks on joining the organization:<\/p>\n

“I’m incredibly excited and honoured to join this organization” said Winstanley. “This is a tremendous opportunity to be part of a franchise with a proud history, passionate supporters, and a commitment to developing young athletes both on and off the ice.
