Saturday Highlights: Offensive horsepower steers Colts to 40th win

 

BARRIE 6 – PETERBOROUGH 4
Minnesota Wild prospect Dmitry Sokolov (47, 48) put together another multi-goal outing to take over the OHL goal-scoring lead as the Barrie Colts earned their 40th win. A 6-4 home win over the Peterborough Petes also included goals from Sam Rhodes (3), Aaron Luchuk (47), Jason Willms (26) and TJ Fergus (7) while Andrei Svechnikov stretched his point streak to 20 games with two helpers. Rookie netminder Kai Edmonds made 37 saves as the Colts won despite being outshot 41-29. Barrie’s sixth win in the last seven games improves their record to 40-21-3-1. The Petes suffer their sixth straight loss as Nikita Korostelev (29), Nick Robertson (14), Adam Timleck (12) and Logan DeNoble (29) lit the lamp and Cole Fraser picked up to assists.

ERIE 4 – WINDSOR 3 – OT
Rookie forward Hayden Fowler (10, 11) tied the game at three with seven seconds left in regulation before scoring the game winner 39 seconds into overtime as the Erie Otters came back to defeat the visiting Windsor Spitfires 4-3. Down 3-1 midway through the third, Kyle Maksimovich (30) brought Erie to within one before Fowler tied things up on the doorstep. Maksimovich and Owen Headrick collected assists on Fowler’s game winner as the Otters ended a three-game slide. Curtis Douglas (22), Lev Starikov (5) and Cole Purboo (19) scored Windsor goals as the Spitfires picked up a point to remain in a sixth-place tie with Saginaw in the Western Conference. Erie outshot Windsor 28-18 before 5,262 at Erie Insurance Arena.

KINGSTON 5 – OTTAWA 4 – OT
Down 4-2 with three minutes to go in the third, Ryan Cranford (16) and Linus Nyman (38) scored to tie things at four before Dallas Stars prospect Jason Robertson (41) scored the winner on the power play 2:14 into overtime. The Frontenacs took a 5-4 road win in Ottawa behind a pair of goals from Los Angeles Kings prospect Gabriel Vilardi (19, 20) while Cliff Pu and Sean Day both had two helpers. Kingston takes both ends of the home-and-home set with Ottawa as goaltender Jeremy Helvig made 26 saves to earn his 30th win of the season and 80th of his OHL career. Rookie Quinn Yule (5, 6) scored twice for Ottawa while other goals came from Tye Felhaber (28) and Travis Barron (18). Hudson Wilson had three assists for the 67’s as they suffered their fourth straight loss, falling to 28-27-6-3 for seventh in the Eastern Conference.

LONDON 4 – FLINT 3
Ottawa Senators prospect Alex Formenton (26, 27, 28) netted a natural hat-trick inside the opening half of the game before rookie Connor McMichael (8) scored the game winner 6:45 into the third period as the London Knights took a 4-3 victory in Flint. London’s sixth straight win sees them solidify their first round playoff series opponent in the Owen Sound Attack. Jordan Kooy turned aside 36 shots as the Knights won despite being outdone 39-28 on the shot clock. Maurizio Colella (23), Ty Dellandrea (27) and Hunter Holmes (10) provided Flint goals as the Firebirds fell to 19-41-3-2 on the campaign. London climbs to 38-23-2-2.

SARNIA 2 – GUELPH 1
Calgary Flames prospect Adam Ruzicka (35) scored the game winner in the slot with 4:32 remaining in the third period as the Sarnia Sting skated to a 2-1 home ice win over the Guelph Storm, setting a new franchise record with their 93rd point of the season. Overage goaltender Justin Fazio stopped 40 of the 41 shots that came his way while Swedish forward Hugo Leufvenius (19) scored a first period goal. Arizona Coyotes prospect Nate Schnarr (16) provided Guelph’s only marker as the Storm dropped their fourth straight decision to fall to eighth in the Western Conference. Anthony Popovich made 30 saves in the loss as the Storm outshot the Sting 41-32 and fall to 28-28-5-4.

NIAGARA 5 – HAMILTON 3
2018 NHL Draft prospect Akil Thomas (21) scored the game winner 1:19 into the third period as the Niagara IceDogs took a 5-3 win in Hamilton. The IceDogs defeat the Bulldogs for the fourth time in five tries this season as Edmonton Oilers prospect Kirill Maksimov (33) had a goal and two assists while Ben Jones (25), Andrew Bruder (4) and Sam Miletic (34) also tallied. Stephen Dhillon turned in a 31-save performance, surrendering Hamilton goals from Matthew Strome (36, 37) and Arthur Kaliyev (29) while Robert Thomas picked up two assists. Hamilton outshot Niagara 34-29 as the Bulldogs went 2-for-3 on the power play. The IceDogs take their third straight win and hold down fourth place in the Eastern Conference while Hamilton falls to 41-18-3-3 but remains four points up on Barrie for the Eastern Conference lead.

OWEN SOUND 5 – SAGINAW 0
Five different goal-scorers propelled the Owen Sound Attack to a 5-0 home ice victory over the Saginaw Spirit as rookie netminder Mack Guzda made 16 saves for his first OHL shutout. Brett McKenzie (17) and Maksim Sushko (30) scored first period goals before Nick Suzuki (35), Ethan Szypula (17) and Alan Lyszczarczyk (19) chipped in with additional markers. Blueliner Trenton Bourque picked up two assists as the Bears outshot the Spirit 34-16 to improve to 34-22-3-5. While home ice advantage is still up for grabs, the Attack will face the London Knights in the first round of the OHL Playoffs. Saginaw falls to 29-27-8-0 and sits in a sixth-place tie with Windsor in the Western Conference.
