Pete’s Bury Colts at Home
A dominant second period resulting in a pair of goals would lead the Peterborough Petes to a 4-1 victory over the Barrie Colts Saturday night at the BMC.
The Colts would play a spirited effort in the loss, taking on one of the powerhouses of the OHL whom were looking to takeover sole possession atop the Eastern Conference.
Ruan Badenhorst was solid in net and busy for the Colts, making 35 saves despite allowing three in taking the loss.
The Colts returning home Saturday night fresh off an eleven round shootout victory the night before would square off against another Eastern Conference frontrunner, the Peterborough Petes for the first time this season.
The young Colts while ending their longest losing skid of the year were looking to put together a winning streak of their own.
From the opening faceoff the two teams would bring a physical and intense pace to this game.
Peterborough would open up the scoring early. Chris Paquette receiving a pass over the Barrie blue line would catch the Colts defense flat-footed breaking in all alone roofing one over the glove of Badenhorst to give the Petes the early lead.
Midway through the first period Robert Proner would square off against Nick Isaacson drawing a large ovation from a packed house at the Molson Centre.
The rough stuff would continue, after a big hit in the Barrie zone, a scrum would ensue in front of Badenhorst leading to consecutive power plays for the Colts, but would not be able to convert on several chances.
Barrie would continue the pressure playing off the home crowd. With just under two minutes remaining the Colts would strike even.
Off a soft dump in into the Petes corner Curtis Douglas would beat the Petes defenders to the puck, dropping it to Kyle Heiztner.
Heitzner would feed Roy Radke skating towards the slot, and fire home his 14th of the season past the blocker of Dylan Wells to even things up going into the intermission.
Peterborough would begin to show their strength to play a dominant attack through much of the second being the difference in this hockey game.
With eight minutes gone by into the second period, the teams would trade penalties resulting in four on four hockey.
Taking advantage of the open ice the Petes would snatch the lead again. Kyle Jenkins would send Jonathan Ang in all alone on Badenhorst snapping one low to the glove side to put the Petes up 2-1.
Just past the midway point of the middle frame, the Colts would find penalty trouble again, getting called for a tripping minor.
Barrie would hold off the Petes relentless attack for much of the kill, but with just seconds remaining before stepping out of the box. Jenkins would hold one in at the blue line to make a pass shot attempt straight the stick of Steve Lorentz redirecting the shot and extend the Petes lead to 3-1.
The Colts would kill off another penalty late in the period to escape and keep the game in reach.
For the first half of the third period both teams would continue the parade to the penalty box giving each team opportunities with the man advantage, but the score would remain the same.
Barrie would skate shot for shot with the Petes creating several chances but Wells would continue his solid play to halt the Colts offense.
With a minute thirty remaining in the game the Colts would pull Badenhorst for the extra attacker, but would quickly lose possession resulting in a Petes empty netter.
The Colts will begin their next slate of games on the road next Friday night with a stop in Guelph to face the Storm before returning to home ice Saturday February 18th to take on the North Bay Battalion for a 7:30pm puckdrop.
