Owen Sounds’ top line dominates in an 8-4 victory over the Colts
Nick Suzuki recorded five points in the victory to give Owen Sound their second win in two games this season in the highway 26 rivalry.
The scoring got started with Barrie on a powerplay, but it was Owen Sound who broke the score. Suzuki was able to intercept a pass, go in on David Ovsjannikov and snap his 7th of the season short side for a shorthanded goal.
A few minutes later the highlight reel was rolling, as Colts rookie Russian forward Kirill Nizhnikov pulled of a spin-o-rama pass over to Giordano Finoro who just laid his stick on it for his 2nd of the season to tie things at 1.
The Attack were looking to end this one early like they did when they defeated Barrie 5-0 earlier this season, and it looked like they were going to do that. They scored 3 goals in a 1:44 span.
First it was Maksim Sushko who received a great pass from Suzuki who picked up his 2nd point of the night on Sushko’s 7th goal of the season.
1:17 after that it was an OHL first for Daylon Groulx. The rookie forward was able to get a stick on a Jacob Friend point shot for his 1st career OHL goal and the 3-1 lead.
They capped off the scoring spree when Kevin Hancock found a lose puck in a bunch of skates and snapped it home past the Colts’ Czech netminder, ending his night between the pipes.
Barrie would not back down. Nizhnikov was able to put home his 3rd goal of the season. The Russian forward was able to get his stick on a Cam Lizotte point shot, giving the boys in blue some life heading into the 1st period break.
In the 2nd, the scoring didn’t stop. 1:28 into the second frame a great passing play put the Attack back up by 3. Matt Struthers puts home his 2nd of the season after Matt Schmalz and Nick Price both made great passes and picked up the assists on the play.
Barrie would respond again, this time off of a funny bounce or Bayshore bounce as they say in Owen Sound. Landed right on the stick of Lucas Chiodo who had Anthony Stefano all alone in front and a wide-open cage to cut the lead to 5-3.
Back and forth they went. Former Sudbury Wolve Matt Schmalz gets his first of the season and first with Owen Sound by using his body and going wide to slide home the Attack’s 6th goal of the evening bringing their lead back to 3
